Patent number: 8805953Abstract: Provided herein are systems and methodologies for highly efficient restoration in a network-based backup system. As described herein, differential-based analysis can be utilized such that a new complete differential is calculated based on signatures and/or other information relating to a given item to be restored prior to retrieving backup data. Based on the differential, only blocks determined to be unique between the current version of the item and the desired version are transmitted, which can then be merged with non-unique locally present blocks to obtain the fully restored version of the item. Further, a hybrid architecture can be employed, wherein signatures and/or data are stored at a global location within a network as well as one or more local peers. Accordingly, a backup client can obtain information necessary for restoration from either the global location or a nearby peer, thus further reducing latency and bandwidth consumption.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2009Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Elissa E. Patent number: 8805955Abstract: A method and system for managing maintenance events in an enterprise computing environment. A client receives a maintenance file associated with a maintenance event from a server. The client device stores the maintenance file in local storage (e.g., cache), without installing the maintenance file. Subsequently, the client device receives an instruction from the server to install the previously downloaded and stored maintenance file.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2011Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Red Hat, Inc.Inventor: Miroslav Suchý

Patent number: 8799480Abstract: The current invention is applicable to a RAN-cache or proxy operating in a wireless mobile network that is functioning as a transparent inline device intercepting wireless mobile protocols such as UMTS, LTE, WIMAX, CDMA etc.), or a traffic off-load device connected to multiple interfaces towards the Core/Internet. The current invention identifies methods for pre-fetching content by emulating portions of a mobile client for gaining connectivity through the mobile-core network, or to use session contexts of other mobile clients in a way not to significantly effect charging and billing for the preloaded content. The pre-load decision of what to pre-load and when to pre-load may be locally derived within the RAN-cache/Proxy device, or in-coordination with a locally connected CDN (Content Delivery Network) device.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2011Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: Movik NetworksInventors: Surya Kumar Kovvali, Charles Boyle

Patent number: 8769049Abstract: The claimed subject matter relates to systems and/or methodologies that facilitate intelligent distribution of backup information across storage locations in network-based backup architectures. A virtual layering of backup information across storage locations in the backup architecture can be implemented. Statistical models are utilized to dynamically re-allocate backup information among storage locations and/or layers to ensure availability of data, minimum latency upon restore, and minimum bandwidth utilization upon restore. In addition, heuristics or machine learning techniques can be applied to proactively detect failures or other changes in storage locations such that backup information can be reallocated accordingly prior to a failure.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2009Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Elissa E. Patent number: 8769055Abstract: The claimed subject matter provides a system and/or a method that facilitates distributed backup and versioning techniques for network-based backup architectures. When data is committed to a backup system, a backup version can be created. The generated backup version can be a complete rendition of data or the generated backup version can be a differential between the data and backup information previously committed to the system. The generated backup version can be replicated across a distributed network of peers. Replication can be based upon a desire level of redundancy of versions, location of peers, network topology of peers, storage capacity of peers, health of peers, type of peer, and the like. In addition, versions can be retained based upon a configurable number of desired versions.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2009Date of Patent: July 1, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Elissa E. Patent number: 8719351Abstract: A system and method automatically rescales an electronic message having one or more associated content. When the electronic message is generated and the associated content connected to the message, an agent of the electronic message application checks predefined settings/configurations of the message client. The sender's e-mail client checks a plurality of conditions, such as, the condition of the network, the type of network, the status or capacity of the receiving inbox of an intended recipient client, and the geographic destination of the message. Based on these dynamic content rescale settings, the sender's client dynamically and optimally rescales the associated content before forwarding the electronic message with the rescaled content to the recipient client. Rescaling of the associated content may be performed by the message exchange server or the recipient client. The recipient client may later request and receive a copy of the associated content without rescaling.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2009Date of Patent: May 6, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Danny Yen-Fu Chen, Ta-Wei Lin, Chih-Wen Su, Meng Li Wong

Patent number: 8677024Abstract: In a method for managing shared Ethernet adapters in a virtualized computer environment, a computer programmed with a hypervisor program receives a first request from a virtual client to transmit data. In response to receiving the first request, the computer programmed with the hypervisor program selects a first active virtual server from a first plurality of concurrently active virtual servers of the virtualized computer environment. The computer programmed with the hypervisor program copies the data from a memory of the virtual client to a trunk adapter of a first shared Ethernet adapter of the selected first active virtual server.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2011Date of Patent: March 18, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Kavitha Vittal Murthy Baratakke, Shaival Jagdishbhai Chokshi, Nikhil Hegde, Vishal Ramachandra Mansur

Patent number: 8560639Abstract: The claimed subject matter relates to systems and/or methodologies that facilitate distributed storage of data. A distributed file system can be implemented on storage nodes such that the system places multiple copies of data (e.g., replicas) on a variety of disparate storage nodes to guarantee availability of the data and minimize loss of the data. Storage nodes are dynamically evaluated to identify respective characteristics. In one example, the characteristics can include availability of a storage node, capacity of a storage node, data storage cost associated with a storage node, data transfer costs associated with a storage node, locality of a storage node, network topology, or user preferences associated with a storage node. Patent number: 8463916Abstract: Traffic engineering and bandwidth management of bundled links may, at times, require the selection of one of a plurality of component links in a bundled link to use in admitting a connection requiring admission. While performing the selection it may be determined that more than one of the component links has the resources required to admit the connection. An admission policy may then be selected from among a plurality of admission policies. Based on the selected admission policy, a particular component link may then be selected. Such bandwidth management, based on admission policies, may be seen to be well suited to balancing and component link recovery in traffic engineered, connection-oriented MPLS networks.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2012Date of Patent: June 11, 2013Assignee: Rockstar Consortium US LPInventors: Sameh Rabbie, Tong Shan

Patent number: 8447808Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for generating and managing presentities in accordance with a virtual presence server. By way of example, a method for requesting information from at least one server comprises the following steps. A client request, which expresses a request that can not be satisfied by a single existing presentity, is obtained at an intermediate server, wherein the intermediate server operates as a virtual presence server. The virtual presence server (i.e., intermediate server) creates a set of software objects for a virtual presentity, the set of objects embodying logic to combine presence information from one or more of existing presentities and external information sources, in accordance with at least one existing presence server. The virtual presence server creates an association between the request of the client and the created virtual presentity that allows the presence information to be propagated back to the client.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2008Date of Patent: May 21, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Arup Acharya, Nilanjan Banerjee, Dipanjan Chakraborty, Koustuv Dasgupta, Archan Misra, Xiping Wang, Charles P.
