  • Patent number: 6584331
Abstract: Disclosed is mobile station system (5) and a method for operating a mobile station (100) to reduce the power consumption thereof as a function of a presence or absence of motion, and as a function of a duration of a period over which motion above a motion threshold is not detected. The system includes cellular system reception circuitry and circuitry implementing a cellular system positioning function and a satellite-based positioning function (GPS). The circuitry includes a controller (120) that operates in accordance with a stored program for obtaining and combining a plurality of received signal-derived parameters of the cellular system, a position of the mobile station derived from the cellular system positioning function, and a position of the mobile station derived from the satellite-based positioning function to derive a value that is indicative of a presence or absence of motion of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6567662
Abstract: A method of interpreting location area information data in a satellite/terrestrial dual mode mobile terminal is provided, with the mobile terminal in the satellite mode and communicating with a satellite system. The method includes the steps of determining if a most recent registration of the mobile terminal was accomplished in the satellite or terrestrial mode and, if it is determined that the most recent registration of the mobile terminal was accomplished in the terrestrial mode, then determining if (1) a satellite operator ID broadcast by the satellite system matches a satellite operator ID from a most recent satellite location update of the mobile terminal, and (2) a satellite beam pair in a satellite spotbeam pair list broadcast by the satellite system matches a satellite beam pair in a satellite spotbeam ID from a most recent satellite location update of the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 6567672
Abstract: A flip type or folder type mobile phone for wireless communication with a base station, which includes a movable part so as to define an open or closed position and an opening/closing sensor for generating an open or close signal according to the open or closed position, the opening/closing sensor being enabled or disabled by an enable or disable signal, whereby the mobile phone terminates a communication channel according to said open or close signal. A communication method is also disclosed and includes the steps of establishing a communication channel between the mobile phone and the base station; and generating a disable signal during data communication to disable the opening/closing sensor from generating the close signal thereby maintaining the communication channel.

  • Patent number: 6556819
Abstract: A security system for a cellular telephone for controlling the status of security features based on location. The invention includes at least one security feature within the cellular telephone that is activated by a triggering event. A memory unit is positioned within the cellular telephone for entering safe zone coordinates. A locator either positioned within, or accessible by, the cellular phone provides for determining the geographic location of the phone. The system compares the present location of the cellular phone with the safe zones maintained in memory. When the triggering event occurs, at least one of the security features is disabled when the cellular phone is within the safe zone coordinates. The security features are maintained enabled when the cellular telephone is outside the safe zone coordinates.

  • Patent number: 6539219
Abstract: Systems and methods related to providing an Intelligent Network (in) service to transparently establish a mid-call conference using a Mobile Station (MS), without requiring an intermediate hold state of an existing call connection between the MS and a second telephony device; such systems and methods can be adapted to implementation in any wireless communications network, such as a Global Services for Mobile Communication (GSM) network. In an exemplary embodiment, a wireless communications network adapted to provide the IN service includes a Mobile-services Switching Center (MSC), and a Service Control Point (SCP), wherein the MSC is operative to send a request to the SCP to activate the IN service, and the SCP is operative to send a Prompt&Collect_User_Information command to the MSC.

  • Patent number: 6529745
Abstract: A mobile station transmitted signal received at array antenna 11 is converted into an intermediate frequency signal in frequency conversion section 12, and converted into a digital signal in analog-digital conversion section 13. Arrival direction estimating section 15 estimates the number of mobile stations and directions thereof by processing the digital signal. Arrival direction tracking section 16 estimates a direction of a mobile station by sequential processing using an estimated result in arrival direction estimating section 15. Beam forming means 17 forms an antenna radiation beam to a direction of the estimated result in arrival direction tracking section 16.

  • Patent number: 6484037
Abstract: A method of establishing a group call in a wireless communications system includes a group call server supplying mobile terminals of a certain type with an indication of call type, and optionally other information, for group calls so as to distinguish such calls from other types of calls. The group call server in charge of the group call may selectively augment the calling party number field of the outgoing paging message with one or more indicator flags when the targeted mobile terminal is adapted to receive and act upon such information. The indicator flags indicate one or more characteristics of the group call, such as call type, call subtype, or priority level. One flag may indicate priority level and another may indicate the call subtype of the group call. The mobile terminals receiving the augmented paging message base their response, such as to auto-answer or not, on the group call characteristics indicated in the paging message.

  • Patent number: 6477378
Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus for use by a low power radio frequency (LPRF) device intended to communicate with other LPRF devices on an LPRF band when both the LPRF band location and its width can vary by country, the invention for determining in what country the LPRF device is being used, and so the band and bandwidth that should be used, and for ensuring that the LPRF does not communicate on an LPRF band that is not likely the correct band, or is not a band indicated by a user. The invention assesses clues to determine if any particular country is reasonably likely to be the country where the device is being used, and if no such country is determined, and if a user interface is available, the device queries a user.
