  • Patent number: 5864953
Abstract: A cutting tool is described for cutting an encircling band of identification tape from a surgical instrument handle. The tool housing has an elongated guide slot with a cutting blade mounted in the housing on a circumference of the guide slot exposed distally at a distal end of the tool. The channel slot has a circumference to accommodate surgical instrument handles having an arcuate cross-sectional segment having a radius which is equal to or less that the radius of the channel slot circumference. The cutting blade is positioned to be tangent to the surgical instrument handle operatively nested within the guide slot. The blade is also positioned to define a chord of the encircling tape band around the instrument handle nested within the guide slot. In use, the blade cuttingly engages the tape band as the tool is slid along the surgical instrument handle toward the edge of the tape band. The blade cuts a full width of the tape band, exposing a fresh margin of tape to allow complete removal.

  • Patent number: 5865085
Abstract: An improved apparatus for removing surrounding insulation from an insulated electrical conductor has a pair of matched frustoconical cutter wheels mounted on a cutter shaft. The cutter wheels incorporate a cutter edge and a beveled outer slope. The cutter wheels are spaced apart by an interchangeable cutter spacer. When properly set up the cutter spacer is of a size so that the cutter wheels flank the conductor of the wire being stripped, cutting only the insulation portion of the wire. The cutter edges pierce and cut the insulation while the slope of the cutter wheels urge the insulation away from the conductor. A pinch roller assembly stabilizes the wire as it passes by the cutter wheels. A diverter is mounted in close proximity to the cutter spacer in a tangential fashion to divert and clear away any insulation that clings to the cutter spacer during operation.

  • Patent number: 5862968
Abstract: Linerless labels are cut or burst from a web by passing the web through infeed and outfeed pairs of rolls with a separator device located therebetween. Each roll pair includes a friction surface for engaging the slick smooth surface of the web and another roll with a silicone elastomeric or plasma-coated surface for engaging substantially without gripping the exposed adhesive side of the linerless label web. In the cutting mode, a rotary blade severs the web against a fixed blade to form the label. The infeed rolls are backed up after each cut to break the adhesive bond between the web and the fixed blade and then reverse to advance the web through the cutting position and into the outfeed rolls for a subsequent cutting operation. The outfeed rolls continue to advance the cut linerless label to a receiving station. In a bursting mode, the web is perforated and a roller breaker bar is disposed between the infeed and outfeed rolls to break the web along the perforations to form the linerless label.

  • Patent number: 5862727
Abstract: A laser arbor is provided that will display a cutting line on a work piece to be cut by a rotary saw. The laser is operated by a centrifugal switch mounted within the laser arbor along with a laser diode or the like and a battery. Because of the rotation of the laser with the blade and the persistence of the human eye, the moving light spot from the laser appears as a single line, hence it is not necessary as in the prior art to produce light divergence in the plane parallel to the blade plane. For that purpose, it is preferable to employ a light source having a wavelength that lies in a region to which the eye is sensitive, which in practice will typically mean a wavelength in the upper region of the red. Placement of the laser inwardly from the cutting surface of the blade eliminates the danger of any damage occurring to the laser as a result of debris from the cutting process.

  • Patent number: 5839183
Abstract: A punch retainer which, in one preferred form, includes at least one bolt head seat formed in the retainer's body for receiving a bolt by which the retainer is fixed to a punch press's mounting plate. The seat is defined in the retainer's bottom face adjacent a peripheral side wall, and a section of the peripheral side wall is removed from the retainer's body to provide access to the seat in a direction generally parallel to the plane of the retainer's bottom face. The punch retainer, in another preferred form, includes a backing plate and a body. A method of assembling this latter punch retainer with a punch press' mounting plate includes press fitting a registration dowel in assembled relation with the retainer's backing plate and body in a tight press fit relation so as to connect firmly the backing plate with the body.

  • Patent number: 5839336
Abstract: In a paper-punching device for use in an image-forming apparatus, the rear edge of a sheet of paper that is being transported through a transport guide is detected by the photosensor. After a predetermined time has passed since the detection, a punching device is activated. At this time, a punching member is depressed downward, and a punching blade attached to its top penetrates through the sheet of paper, thereby forming a punch hole. Even during the punching operation, transport rollers continue to rotate. Therefore, when the sheet of paper is caught by the punching blade, the transport rollers are allowed to slip a predetermined amount with respect to the paper. For this reason, at least one of the transport rollers is made of a foamed material. With this arrangement, since the punching operation is carried out on the rear side of the sheet of paper, it becomes possible to reduce the occurrence of paper jams even if sheets of paper are transported in succession.
