Abstract: A mesomorphic polymer comprises recurring units of the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein U denotes a polymer main chain unit; V denotes --(CH.sub.2).sub.m -- or --((CH.sub.2).sub.2 --O).sub.m -- each capable of having a substituent selected from alkyl group, halogen atom, amino group or carbonyl group substituting one or more of the hydrogen atoms wherein m is an integer of 0-30; W denotes a single bond, --O--, --OCO--, --COO--, CONR.sup.1 --, --CO-- or --NR.sup.1 -- wherein R.sup.1 denotes hydrogen atom or alkyl group; X denotes a mesogen unit comprising at least two rings selected from aromatic carbon rings, aromatic heterocyclic rings and alicyclic rings each capable of having a substituent and connected with a single bond, --O--, --OCO--, --COO--, --(CH.sub.2).sub.n --, --N.dbd.N--, --(CH.dbd.CH).sub.m --, --CH.dbd.N--, --N.dbd.CH--, --(C.ident.C).sub.n 13 , --CONR.sup.1, --(CO).sub.n -- or NR.sup.1 -- wherein R.sup.1 is the same as defined above and n is an integer of 1-10; Y denotes --COOCH.sub.
Abstract: A process for producing thin, anisotropic layers composed of liquid crystalline substances, the liquid crystalline substances being applied in a thin layer to one side of a support having a surface prestructured in such a way that the structure is given a preferred direction which determines orientation of the liquid crystalline substance and data storage devices produced.

Abstract: A naphthalene compound having the following formula (I) and a liquid crystal composition containing the same: ##STR1## wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, Y and Z independently represent a monovalent group selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## wherein W represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, R represents an alkyl group having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, provided that Y and/or Z represent the alkyl group, which is an optically active group including an asymmetric carbon having the following formula (II): ##STR3## wherein A is a group or atom selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, alkoxy groups, halogen atoms and fluoroalkyl groups, n is an integer of 0 to 3, m is an integer of 3 to 6, and *C represents an asymmetric carbon.
