Patent number: 4228845Abstract: A shell-tube bundle heat exchanger is so arranged as to leave a section within the shell devoid of tubes. Into said section relatively hot vapors are introduced to be mixed with chilling medium within said shell and surrounding said tubes. A baffle means is provided to prevent liquid disturbed by introduction of the vapors from transmitting disturbance to the cooling medium surrounding the tubes. Patent number: 4226280Abstract: A flexible liner, e.g. of rubber, for a manifold or apertured plate having collared apertures is disclosed, the manifold or apertured plate being part of a header tank of a heat exchanger having a bank of tubes, such as an automobile radiator. The liner has holes rimmed with sleeves corresponding to the collared apertures of the manifold or apertured plate. The sleeves are squeezed between their associated tubes and collar to effect fluidtightness around the tubes. To prevent stress developed in the sleeves being transmitted to the rest of the liner, a zone of reduced section surrounds each hole and preferably is of similar contour and coaxial therewith. The zones of reduced section are preferably grooves opening onto the side of the liner remote from the side from which the sleeves project.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1979Date of Patent: October 7, 1980Assignee: Societe Anonyme Francaise du FerodoInventors: Bruno Hellouin de Cenival, Jean-Louis Moulene

Patent number: 4226281Abstract: A matrix of small diameter holes are located in the module housing adjacent each of the integrated circuit chips to be cooled. A pin or rod is located in each of the holes and extends therefrom into contact with the exposed surface of the chip. A spring means is located between the housing and the pin to provide a predetermined spring loading of the pin-piston against the exposed surface of the chip. A header is located at the outer end of the pin-piston in contact with the exposed surface of the chip thereby, providing multiple pin-piston contact with the exposed surface of the chip regardless of the chip tilt which improves the heat transfer. The heat transfer can be controlled by including or removing pin-pistons in accordance with the heat transfer desired.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1979Date of Patent: October 7, 1980Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Richard C. Patent number: 4224981Abstract: A feed-water preheater for a steam power plant is disclosed. Feed-water at a relatively low temperature is conducted through bundles of heater tubes in heat exchange relation with steam from the turbine. The heater tubes are arranged in a U-shaped bundle, with one leg of the U serving as the cold inlet side and the other leg of the U serving as the warm outlet side of the heat exchanger. A partition extends lengthwise of the heater tubes between the legs and the U-shaped bundle. Patent number: 4223722Abstract: An improved reheater for a moisture separator reheater includes an inlet header, an outlet header and a plurality of heat-exchange tubes connected therebetween. The inlet header is partitioned to provide at least two separate sections. Piping and control valves are also provided to supply steam to each section of the inlet header from the reheater inlet pipe. The improved reheater includes at least one bundle of tubes communicating with the header(s) via tubesheet(s). The inlet ends of the tubes may be differentially orificed whereby in combination with a nominal flow rate to the partitions, in-tube condensate subcooling is substantially eliminated with minimal scavenging steam at design conditions. At off-design, or low power level, conditions, where fixed resistances of orifices and fixed partitions cannot accommodate changes in heat transfer demand from tube to tube, the aforementioned control valves are automatically adjusted.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1978Date of Patent: September 23, 1980Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Russell L. Shade, Jr.

Patent number: 4221263Abstract: A tube-type vessel, such as a heat exchanger, has tubes that extend away from a tubesheet provided with holes which axially align with the tubes and open into the tube interiors. The diameter of each hole in the tubesheet is less than the outside diameter of the tube with which it aligns, but is greater than the inside diameter of the tube, thereby producing an offset between the inside surface of the tube and the surface of the hole. The tubes are attached to the tubesheet by welds, and each weld forms a fillet between exterior surface of its tube and the back face of the tubesheet and further forms a smooth beveled transition between the inside surface of the tube and the surface of the hole. The fillets eliminate the crevices that surround the tubes in conventional structures, and as a consequence no material will build up around the tubes and collapse them. To unite the tubes with the tubesheet, the latter at each hole is provided with a socket into which the end of a tube is fitted.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1978Date of Patent: September 9, 1980Assignee: Nooter CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4220199Abstract: A plate tube spacer structure operable for concomitantly effecting both the spacing and the supporting of the individual tubes of a tube bundle, the latter commonly constituting one of the components of a conventionally constructed heat exchanger. The subject plate tube spacer structure includes a plurality of elongated plates that are suitably disposed in stacked, spaced relation so as to allow for a layer of tubes to be interposed between each pair of adjacent plates. The plates each have a multiplicity of tube engaging means formed along each longitudinally extending side edge thereof. The multiplicity of tube engaging means are suitably disposed so as to effectively provide each plate with two parallel rows thereof. The arrangement of the rows of tube engaging means of each plate is such that the multiplicity of tube engaging means of one row thereof are aligned with, but face in a direction opposite to that of the multiplicity of tube engaging means of the other row thereof.Type: GrantFiled: January 2, 1979Date of Patent: September 2, 1980Assignee: Combustion Engineering, Inc.Inventor: Nicholas D. Patent number: 4220194Abstract: Improved means for substantially eliminating condensate subcooling in single-stage moisture separator reheaters is provided by recirculating large quantities of scavenging steam through the reheater tube bundle. Heating steam for the tubeside (within the tubes of the tube bundle) of the reheater is extracted from the main steam supply upstream of the high-pressure turbine. This main steam is throttled before entering the tube bundle at part load conditions to reduce the temperature differential with respect to the high-pressure turbine exhaust steam which is to be reheated on the shellside. The tubes of the tube bundle are differentially orificed at their inlet to provide sufficient steam to each tube based on complete condensation at tube exit. At throttled, part load conditions, considerable excess scavenging steam is required to correct for the inefficiencies of the fixed orifices at these off-design conditions.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1978Date of Patent: September 2, 1980Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Russell L.
