  • Patent number: 5431114
Abstract: A combustion apparatus including a mixture feeding pipe for injecting a mixture of pulverized coal for combustion air into a furnace, with the mixture being then ignited. A first gas feeding passage is disposed outwardly of the mixture feeding pipe for feeding oxygen-containing gas into the furnace, with a second gas feeding passage being disposed between the gas feeding passage and the mixture feeding pipe, in a radial direction, for feeding the oxygen-containing gas into the furnace. A projection is disposed between the gas feeding passage and the mixture feeding pipe and extends at an exposed end surface thereof into the furnace beyond an exposed end of the mixture feeding pipe, with the projection being hollow for allowing the oxygen-containing gas to flow within the projection.

  • Patent number: 5427521
Abstract: A valve flushing system supplies a cleaning gas to a relatively large plenum, which in turn communicates with a restricted passage directing the flow along a face of the valve disk. In a main feature of this invention, a flushing gas flow moves through a restricted path along a face of a valve disk away from a valve disk contact area with a valve seat. In this way, the flushing gas prevents a potential leakage gas flow from approaching the valve/valve seat interface. In this way, leakage is reduced. Although the efficiency of the system may be reduced by a small amount, the resulting prevention of leakage more than justifies this potential small decrease in efficiency. The use of the relatively large plenum ensures that there will be complete and adequate coverage of the valve disk preventing any leakage across the valve disk. In an important feature of this invention, supply passages extend into the plenum along a direction which does not include a component moving in the direction of the valve disk.

  • Patent number: 5426868
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for making an external circulation fluid bed furnace which does not require a chamber for retaining heat transporting medium communicating with the down comer. According to the method of the present invention, said chamber is eliminated by properly determining the dimension of the down comer etc. According to the present invention, the ratio of the diameter of the down comer to the diameter of the riser so that the ratio (X) thereof falls in an area between two lines described as follows, in a Ws-X plane:Ws=12500X.sup.5 -12080X.sup.4 +4370X.sup.3 -600X.sup.2 +36XandWs=5800X.sup.4 +1600X.sup.3 -580X.sup.2 +44Xwherein, Ws is flow rate of solid heat transport medium in the riser at each unit area the cross section (kg/m.sup.2 sec); X is a ratio of the diameter of down comer (d) to the diameter of riser (D).

  • Patent number: 5419699
Abstract: An improved seal arrangement is disclosed for use in batch coil annealing furnaces. The furnace has extending from its base a pair of cylindrical upright supports having exposed membrane engaging seal edges and between which an underpressure chamber is formed. The inner cover which removably rests on the base, has an annular top plate extending radially outwardly from its sidewall adjacent the cover's bottom end. Extending vertically downwardly from the top plate are concentric inner and outer clamp mechanisms which clamp flat annular elastomer seal therebetween. An overpressure chamber is formed between the seal and the top plate and when the inner cover is seated on the base, an underpressure chamber is formed between the seal and the upright supports.

  • Patent number: 5416979
Abstract: Apparatus for drying a wet paper web during manufacture of the paper web. The apparatus allows the moisture profile of the web to be carefully controlled and adjusted. The apparatus includes a rotatable dryer drum and a hood partially encompassing the rotatable dryer drum. A plurality of elongated heater nozzle boxes are disposed in the hood interior and extend across the dryer drum in the cross-machine direction, the elongated heater nozzle boxes being arrayed side-by-side in the machine direction. A plurality of gas burners is located in each of the nozzle box interiors and arranged side-by-side along the length of the nozzle box interiors for producing hot combustion gases within the nozzle box interiors of the heater nozzle boxes.

  • Patent number: 5407130
Abstract: A vehicle heating system for use with an engine having a liquid cooling circuit in which a heat storage battery stores latent heat during the operation of the engine, and the latent heat is later used to supply heat to the engine and the passenger compartment heating system during a subsequent use of the vehicle. A bypass circuit is provided within the heating system for bypassing the heat storage battery, whereby recharging of the heat storage battery is prevented until after the engine of the vehicle has reached a desired operating temperature.
