  • Patent number: 6805821
Abstract: A method of wet granulation of fertilizer and other materials into granules. The method involves formation of the granule directly on the pan from the feedstock without intermediate steps or the use of seed materials. The result is a product having a completely uniform cross section. The feedstock is initially in the size distribution of −150 mesh with 90% or greater in the size range of 200 mesh. Moisture is maintained to facilitate a steady process without cycling. The method has the advantage of allowing granulation of materials either known to be hazardous or inherently difficult to granulate in a safe and expedient manner. The process permits the formation of multiple feedstock granules. The initial feedstock may be augmented with a different feedstock in a second pan having a different composition and size from the initial feedstock.

  • Patent number: 6800239
Abstract: A composite sports racquet frame is made by placing a first prepreg tube into a first mold plate and a second prepreg tube into a second mold plate. A plurality of pin plates, each having a plurality of pins which are at least substantially parallel to one another, are secured to the mold plate so that, when the mold is closed, the pins extend between the two tubes. The tubes are pressurized to assume the shape of the mold and contact one another, and the mold is heated to allow resin to flow between the tubes as they cure, the pins forming pin holes in the frame. Once cured, the frame is removed from the mold, and the pins are withdrawn. If desired, the ends of the tubes forming the handle section can be kept separate from one another during the molding process, by using a removable mold plate. In this manner, not only do the two tubes become integral with one another, at least in the head portion, but string holes do not need to be drilled after the racquet is molded.

  • Patent number: 6793865
Abstract: A measuring gage for determining the thickness of a non-metallic material utilizes an inductive sensor positioned on one side of the material to be measured and a metallic object placed on the opposite side. The output of the sensor is used to determine the distance between the sensor and the metallic object, and hence the thickness of the material. The movement of the sensor and the metallic object can be computer controlled to map the thickness of the material along a predetermined path and produce a cross-sectional thickness profile. The output of the sensor can be used in conjunction with a computer controller responsible for adjusting the size of a score line to prepare an airbag deployment section in a vehicle trim panel.

  • Patent number: 6776949
Abstract: An apparatus and method for bonding polymeric materials is provided. The apparatus and method both utilize ferromagnetic materials in association with the polymeric materials to be bonded together. The polymeric materials, and the ferromagnetic material, are placed within a magnetic field, which causes hysteresis losses in the ferromagnetic field, and thus elevation in the temperature of both the ferromagnetic material and the polymeric materials to the point where the polymeric materials melt and fuse together. The ferromagnetic materials only rise in temperature to their Curie temperatures, at which point the hysteresis losses cease, and the polymeric material stops being heated. Removing the electromagnetic field allows for cooling and fusing.

  • Patent number: 6773655
Abstract: Large composite structures are produced using a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding process incorporating a resin distribution network. The resin distribution network is provided by a textured sheet of metal formed as an integral vacuum bag and mold. The texture is formed by upraised portions on one side of the sheet which correspond with depressions on the other side. Valleys between the upraised portions form the resin distribution network. A fiber lay up is placed against the textural sheet with the upraised portions facing the lay up. Main feeder grooves are also formed directly in the sheet. Resin is supplied under vacuum to the main feeder grooves, from where it travels through the valleys of the textured sheet to impregnate the lay up.

  • Patent number: 6773651
Abstract: An article support such as a shelf or a table top has a frame that, in its heated state, slidably receives a glass or plastic planar sheet into grooves along two opposing edges of the frame, until an end of the sheet abuts a third edge of the frame that joins the two opposing edges. The edges of the frame have lips that rest on a portion of the top surface of the sheet. When cooled, the frame contracts such that the edges of the sheet are tightly engaged within the grooves of the frame and the lips tightly abut the top surface of the sheet, thereby creating an article support that resists spills around its periphery. The frame may be reheated to expand the material of the frame, permitting removal of the sheet from the frame. Thus, the frame and the sheet may be recycled.
