  • Patent number: 6669430
Abstract: A data storage library and method of operation are disclosed wherein access at least to part of at least one robotic mechanism from the data storage library's exterior is permitted. Access is accomplished through a service port in the library's housing. Access to the storage cells, and thus the data cartridges sitting therein, from the library's exterior is blocked. Blocking access to the storage cells may be provided by a geometry of the service port itself, or by a combination of a door and the robotic mechanism being serviced filling the opening created by the service port. For robotic mechanisms operating on a track, part of the track may be routed through the service port to bring the robotic mechanisms to the exterior of the library for maintenance purposes.

  • Patent number: 6663334
Abstract: An apparatus for random access storage and retrieval of a plurality of microplates is provided. The apparatus includes a plurality of microplate racks arranged in a stack. Each of the racks is mechanically engaged with a plurality of support columns and each of the columns has a plurality of locking devices corresponding to the plurality of racks. The apparatus also includes a lift, coupled to the support columns, for moving the stack or a portion thereof, and a controller, coupled to the lift and the locking devices. The controller is responsive to a signal to access a desired rack or microplate to cause actuation of one or more of the locking devices corresponding to the rack adjacent to the desired rack or microplate, followed by actuation of the lift, thereby moving a portion of the stack a sufficient distance to allow access to the desired rack or microplate.

  • Patent number: 6659704
Abstract: In the conventional air cargo transportation system, the transportation of the cargo that is stored inside of the airport terminal building, to the area of the loading/unloading door is normally performed using the package/cargo carts. However, numerous workers were needed to load the cargo and drive the carts, which is very labor intensive and entails high manpower costs. The conventional system is also dangerous as they move along the complex tarmac markings.

  • Patent number: 6655890
Abstract: There is provided an apparatus and methods for separating an article of laundry from a bundle of articles. The bundle is located in a truck which is clamped into a carriage by a clamping arm or attached to guide rails. The truck is moved by a suitable drive in a controlled manner beneath a grip device which is movable into and out of the truck. The grip device is mounted on a carriage which is movable upwards relative to a frame by a winch and downwards by gravity. The grip device picks the article from the bundle using a dual clamp structure and lifts the article up past an adjacent conveyor which is mounted so as to oscillate about a roller. An air jet means is also provided to blow the article into a nip defined between the conveyor belt and a spring loaded nip roller. Sensors are provided for sensing overload conditions for the conveyor and the grip device.

  • Patent number: 6652214
Abstract: This is a slide, roller-bed, magnlev, or fluid lift side transfer platform system for transfer of transport or cargo containers from and to railway cars, motor trucks or conveyor and a dock. The container has transfer arms that extend or lock into corner castings on a side and can be hinged to swing down to position wheels on the arms to track in parallel channels slanted obliquely out away from the car to pull the container out parallel as the train moves to dock the container. The car is moved in the opposite direction to receive the container. The car can extend a push arm to engage the container or a starter to accelerate the container to train speed at alignment for it to be pushed along the oblique channels parallel into an empty berth on the train. The accelerator arm can retard a container pushed out from the moving train. Roll up-down side doors on the car operate the transfer arms to raise and lower with the lower door and secure the container in place when closed.

  • Patent number: 6652213
Abstract: An automated warehouse system for a building has elevators for automatically accepting incoming material on pallets. A rotating forklift mounted inside the elevator extends its forks to reach out and bring in the pallets. Once inside, the rotating forklift spins around to face inside warehouse doors. When the elevator car arrives at a designated level, the rotating forklift deposits the material on the pallet on a temporary shelf just outside the elevator. Each level has an aisle cart that moves along an aisleway for both a loading elevator and an unloading elevator. Each aisleway is intersected by several row rails that are right angles to the aisleway. The aisle cart carries a battery powered row cart that can run back and forth along the rows. The aisle cart is positioned at the appropriate row along the aisleway, and the row cart carries, deposits, and picks up material on pallets. Storage positions are provided along each row, front to rear.

  • Patent number: 6648579
Abstract: A wheelchair lift for a vehicle has a parallelogram support for a platform foldable on a horizontal axis and hinged on a vertical axis. A hydraulic cylinder extends between end points that are spaced from the apices of members coupled as a parallelogram, the end points being on a line that is inclined outwardly (when the lift is retracted) and/or downwardly (when the lift is lowered). Barriers are coupled mechanically to the parallelogram members so as to deploy when the lift is first displaced from its stowed/retracted position. The barriers have a lost motion aspect whereby if a user is located in the deployment path and obstructs the deployment of the barrier(s), for example, the barrier moves up to the obstruction and stops against it while the lift can continue to move.

  • Patent number: 6648156
Abstract: A method for handling containers in which containers are stacked using a moveable crane with a travelling part such as a trolley (8) arranged to lift, move and land a container (7) on a stacking target (15) in a stack comprising a least one ground container (1). The method is characterised by the steps of measuring the horizontal position of the stacking target (15), determining the horizontal position of the ground container (1), and comparing the relative positions of stacking target (15) and ground container (1). An overlap is developed from the relative positions of the stacking target (15) and the ground container (1), and compared to predetermined limits. If the overlap is within limits a desired landing position (25) on the stacking target (15) is selected for the container (7). Advantages include automatic stacking, faster stacking, safer stacks and dense packing of stacks in a container terminal.

  • Patent number: 6648587
Abstract: A material delivery system is disclosed which is particularly useful for filtered environments, such as clean rooms, minienvironments, or the like. One aspect of this particular material delivery system is that movement of an elevator is automatically controlled (i.e., no operator input), and more preferably is accomplished by monitoring for the presence of containers at multiple vertical positions. Another aspect of this particular material delivery system is that its elevator may be installed on and removed from a main housing of the material delivery system without requiring any tools. Yet another aspect of this particular material delivery system is that containers need not be unloaded from the material delivery system prior to removing its elevator, such as for replacement/maintenance purposes.
