  • Patent number: 4706366
Abstract: An inner tube (1) and an outer tube (6) are provided of suitable shape and size for the inner tube to be received coaxially inside the outer tube, thereby causing the outside face of the inner tube to face the inside face of the outer tube. A neutron-absorbing screen (2) is fixed to one of said faces. The inner tube is inserted into the outer tube, and the inner tube is radially expanded into the outer tube while leaving the outer tube externally free to expand, and thereby plastically deforming both tubes and obtaining a solid single block assembly of desired shape and size for the container. The container may be used for storing radioactive material.

  • Patent number: 4704781
Abstract: In the process for mounting a slide fastener segment or slide fastener near the opposing edges of two pieces of material, particularly on a slit in a piece of clothing, a slide fastener strip, the slide fastener segment or the slide fastener and the pieces of material are fed to the sewing stations of a two needle sewing machine. The pieces of material in the region between the sewing stations are positioned to form a gap and are curved so that a portion of each hangs substantially vertically from two fold edges or creases in an intervening space between both of the sewing stations. Both slide fastener halves of the open slide fastener segment or the open slide fastener are sewn on from above on the horizontal portion of the pieces of the material along the fold edges. Apparatuses for performing the process according to my invention are also described.

  • Patent number: 4700471
Abstract: Disclosed is device (10) for orienting and conveying a headed fastener (14), wherein the device is positioned beneath any suitable dispenser (12) whereby headed fasteners are removed from a supply container and successively dropped with random orientation onto the device. The device (10) is configured to receive the headed fasteners (14) within a selected groove (32, 132) so that the headed fastener will assume a predetermined orientation within the device. The oriented fastener is then conveyed from the point it is received in the groove to a conduit (55, 57) which directs the headed fastener into the feeder tube (16) of the fastening machine. The fasteners are rotated as they are conveyed along the device in order to create a gyroscopic effect in the fastener as a means of maintaining the relative orientation of the fastener as it moves through the groove toward the feeder tube.

  • Patent number: 4698905
Abstract: A fastener-assembling apparatus has a safety device including a vertically movably safe-confirmation member which is normally disposed in its lowermost position in which the gap between the safe-confirmation member and a die is substantially equal to the thickness of a garment fabric. In its lowermost position, the safe-confirmation member maintains a limit switch closed to continue a power supply to a drive for a punch. When the operator's finger or a tool is inadvertently inserted into the gap between the safe-confirmation member and the die, the safe-confirmation member is raised to open the limit switch to discontinue the power supply to the punch.

  • Patent number: 4698894
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a novel method and apparatus for aligning and locating a die set in a press used in the manufacture of materials. In particular, this method and apparatus is intended for locating a die set with respect to a bolster plate or bed and with respect to a ram of a punch press for securely clamping the die set on the bolster and ram. The method comprises mating a keyway cut in a lower die plate with a corresponding key fixed on the bolster plate and hydraulically clamping the die set to the bolster plate and ram once mated. The hydraulic clamping is accomplished by moving a hydraulic clamp in a T-slot on the bolster plate until the clamp contacts a receiving area on the die set, and then activating the hydraulic clamp. The apparatus is disclosed for implementing the described method.

  • Patent number: 4694571
Abstract: A film changing apparatus automatically replaces an exposed X-ray film accommodated in a cassette with a new or unexposed X-ray film. Unloading and loading of a film is effected in the vertical direction. Thus, the apparatus saves space in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, unloading of a film from the cassette is effected by gravity, thereby simplifying the structure of the mechanism for changing films, and thus allowing the size of the apparatus to be reduced as a whole.

  • Patent number: 4692988
Abstract: A method of protecting mating screw threads at least under tightening torques is described in which a dry lubricant such as molybdenum disulphide is applied to one screw thread, and a liquid lubricant is applied to the other screw thread. The screw threads are then tightened to the required torque value. When completely mated the leakage path will not be masked as a result of volatilization of any of the components of either lubricant.

  • Patent number: 4689870
Abstract: Honeycomb floor panels for use in elevated floors or the like are disclosed. The honeycomb structure provides similar metal strips providing lateral cuts along one edge providing angulated tabs. The angulation of the tabs provides an angulated throat having a width substantially greater than the thickness of the strips so that the strips can be assembled in an interfitting relationship while the strips of the two arrays are angulated with respect to each other. After assembly, the arrays are moved to a substantially perpendicular position, and in such position a tight fitting relationship is achieved to eliminate looseness. Such honeycomb is provided, in accordance with one embodiment, with upper and lower metal sheets which are welded or otherwise fastened to the honeycomb itself. In such embodiment, an additional upper surface sheet is provided to prevent denting and to distribute concentrated loads to prevent crushing of the honeycomb. Sound deadening is provided between the two upper sheets.

  • Patent number: 4689881
Abstract: This invention is found in the construction or configuration of the elements in the head of a driver apparatus utilized in securing screws in wooden members and to its relationship with a wire magazine loader mounted to the driving apparatus itself. The invention comprises a head member having a top and an outer wall which encompasses a cavity that forms crossed passageways extending to the top, openings in the outer wall communicating with cavity, atmosphere and magazine loader. The first of such cavity passageways is formed by vertically-oriented walls and a bottom, for containing an eyelet screw. A bar is provided at the bottom, in alignment with the first passageway for supporting the screw eyelet to which a hanger wire is to be threaded.

  • Patent number: 4689868
Abstract: The invention pertains to the attachment of a wrenching nut to a metal conduit wherein torque forces can be applied to the conduit through the nut. An annular nut member is located upon a conduit and the conduit is radially deformed to force the conduit material into engagement with keying surfaces defined upon the nut. Conduit deformation occurs on both sides of the nut for axial positioning thereof, as well as establishing a torque transmitting relationship between the nut and conduit.

  • Patent number: 4688319
Abstract: A method for production of a multi-layer gap-less steel pipe. An inner pipe and an outer pipe are formed from thermomechanically rolled steel strip with high notched bar impact strength by welding. The individual helical welding seam steel pipes of about the same lengths are matched with a difference of less than about one percent between the outer diameter of the inner pipe and the inner diameter of the outer pipe. The matched inner pipe is inserted into the outer pipe and the pipes are mechanically expanded with diameter control to a preset outer diameter of the multi-layer steel pipe. The resulting multi-layer steel pipe has the inner pipe disposed under compression and the outer pipe layer disposed under stress. The presence of a compression stress in the inner pipe provides a means opposed to hydrogen sulfide stress corrosion.

  • Patent number: 4688327
Abstract: Apparatus for processing the damaged tubes of a steam generator. This apparatus includes a sleeving tool for inserting sleeves in the tubes, a high-roller tool for rolling the sleeves at their upper ends where they have been expanded, and a low-roller tool for rolling the sleeves at their lower ends in the tube sheet. Each tool is provided with locking pins which engage tubes adjacent to a tube to be processed and suspend the tool in processing position. The sleeves are inserted in the tubes and are rolled by rolls driven by a hydraulic motor. For sleeve insertion and for high and low rolling, the motor is controlled by a servo control valve. The feedback signal to this valve is derived from a flow transducer in the feed line for the motor. The feedback for the force of sleeve insertion is the pressure across the motor derived from pressure transducers in the conductors through which the motor is supplied. For insertion speed and for rolling speed, the feedback is derived from a fluid-flow transducer.
