  • Patent number: 10296064
Abstract: The invention relates to a mechanism for decreasing power consumption in a wireless terminal intended for a communication system where availability of a common air medium is to be determined by the terminal prior to transmission. The terminal selects at least one communication device as a communicating peer and adjusts receiver performance based on received signal strength and optionally other parameters measured from at least one of the at least one wireless communication device, the receiver performance being adjusted for listening to the at least one wireless communication device with reduced power consumption. The terminal further generates an indication when its own transmission is approaching and readjusts the receiver performance for determining the availability of the common air medium at a performance level enabling detection of devices that may be disturbed by said own transmission.

  • Patent number: 8965341
Abstract: A system for restricting operation of wireless devices, for example cell phones, comprises a controller and a plurality of sensors. The system restricts device usage, while permitting emergency phone calls, for example 911 calls. The sensors receive transmissions from devices, and use the transmissions for identification and determining whether a device is within a restricted zone. One disclosed method is triangulation, using time of arrival of transmissions at the sensors. If the device is within the zone, the controller sends device identification, and possibly a customized restriction request, to a remote node, for example a control node of a cell phone network operator. The operator then uses its network resources to implement the requested restrictions. Communication between the controller and the remote node is secure, possibly encrypted, to minimize malicious interference. A wireless control can define vertices of the zone and exempt certain devices from restrictions. Jamming is not required.

  • Patent number: 8929807
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide an approach for transmitting/broadcasting messages/content (e.g., audio) by routing such messages to an intended audience/recipient(s), and optionally applying audio preferences to broadcast characteristics. Specifically, embodiments of the present invention may receive a message/broadcast in a queue, and identify a set of intended recipients of the broadcast (e.g., based on the content therein). Once the intended recipients have been identified, a set of locations of the intended recipients may be determined. Based on the locations, at least one output device is selected (e.g., based on proximity of the output device(s) to the intended recipients). Thereafter, the broadcast may be transmitted to the intended recipients via the selected output device(s), while any associated audio preferences are applied. In one embodiment, if an intended recipient is listening to other content, such content may be muted and/or paused so that the transmitted broadcast may be heard.

  • Patent number: 8639237
Abstract: A system and a method for controlling access at a user end are disclosed. The correlation between a tag signal of a femtocell access point and a tag signal of a fixed internet device is established, such that when the femtocell access point would access internet via the fixed internet device, a tag signal of the femtocell access point and a tag signal of the fixed internet device are acquired, so as to determine whether the tag signal of the femtocell access point and the tag signal of the fixed internet device match the correlation in the data bank. When the tag signal of the femtocell access point and the tag signal of the fixed internet device match the correlation, the femtocell access point is allowed to provide access services. The present invention provides an effective mechanism for controlling access at a user end.

  • Patent number: 5876132
Abstract: A method and system for printing a high density sequence of characters of M characters per inch from a predetermined character set. A print head having multiple print wires or pins is utilized to print a matrix of "dots" at a selected pel density, preferably 4M pels per inch for higher print throughput. The character set is then examined and a small selected number of characters are identified which require a character matrix having a width of four pels to achieve a desired level of legibility. All remaining characters in a character set are assigned a character matrix having a width of three or three and one-half pels in order to achieve the desired level of legibility. Thereafter, a high density sequence of characters having a high level of legibility can be printed at low pel densities having only a slight degradation in legibility in the event that two characters which each require a four pel width character matrix are adjacent.

  • Patent number: 5873661
Abstract: A recording apparatus includes a recording head. The recording head is provided with a recording device string made up of a plurality of recording elements. The recording device string is arranged at a specified angle in relation to the direction perpendicular to the direction in which the recording head moves. A plurality of recording elements is divided into a plurality of blocks and sequentially driven in units of blocks at a specified interval. When recording is performed from a position other than an end of the recording device string, the drive sequence of the blocks is changed. The block including the recording element corresponding to a recording start position is first driven and recording data is read with the effective use of a signal line in a data bus.

  • Patent number: 5873663
Abstract: A printing apparatus capable of printing by moving a carriage mounting a printing head to a recording paper detects a movement of the carriage for a predetermined distance by an encoder, clocks the time for the carriage to move in the distance, and obtains the moving speed of the carriage in accordance with the clocked time. Time intervals for printing by the printing head are determined by the carriage moving speed, and a printing is performed at a constant printing density in an acceleration/deceleration area in addition to the area where the carriage is moving at a constant speed.

  • Patent number: 5871288
Abstract: A method is provided for improving print quality for a 2-D bar code. The method includes determining printer type, including print resolution, for printer that will print 2-D bar code and entering paper type for the envelope. A suggested 2-D bar code module size is calculated based on the paper and the printer type. A test sample 2-D bar code is printed at the suggested 2-D bar code module size. The printed test sample is scanned and then evaluated for print quality and readability. The method can also suggest a 2-D bar code module size to the user.

  • Patent number: 5853252
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed that can be used to print the U.P.C./EAN symbology in a way that does not suffer poor print quality over a range of ink spread conditions by applying appropriately more or less thermal energy to at least one row of dots on the internal edges of the ambiguous characters. The resultant characters have identical edge-to-edge measurements to those without the compensation; but, the sum of the widths of the bars are beneficially adjusted. The resulting print quality grades and scanning performance are enhanced on thermal printer platforms of moderate to high resolution.
