  • Patent number: 6814922
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the production of a container (45″), with an opening (53), whose opening axis (57) is at an angle to the container axis (23), whereby a blank (45) is introduced into a blowing mould (11, 13), a fixing region (47) of the blank (45) pressed against a stop zone (41) on the blowing mould and the blank pneumatically formed in the blowing mould. The fixing region (47) of the blank (45) is pressed against a stop zone (41) on the blowing mould, inclined at an angle other than 90°. The moulding thus occurs such that an opening region axis (58) of the blank (45, 45′) is at an angle to the container region axis (59) of the blank (45, 45′). The opening axis (57), of the blowing mould (11), forms an angle to a longitudinal axis (51) of a stretching drift (49), which may be extended along the longitudinal axis thereof.

  • Patent number: 6811739
Abstract: Fuel system components for vehicles may be made from polyethylene components which are typically blow molded. To inhibit fuel vapour permeation, the polyethylene is often co-extruded into a parison with the parison comprising a barrier layer. Upon trimming flash or in the mold closure itself, the barrier layer may be ruptured. Sealing of areas of discontinuity in the fuel system component to inhibit hydrocarbon vapour pass through is achieved by sealing the area of barrier discontinuity with a sealing bead which has the necessary barrier properties. The barrier properties may be inherent in the sealing bead material or in a barrier layer extruded into the sealing bead.

  • Patent number: 6808673
Abstract: A hollow body is formed from several multi-layer plastic elements which are welded together and comprise a barrier layer that is a barrier to liquids and to gases. The elements form an appendage which extends from an outer surface of the hollow body, wherein the appendage comprises two multi-layer plastic layers, each of the two layers having a respective barrier layer. A method for manufacturing the hollow body includes using compression moulding in a multi-part mould comprising welding kerbs. When the mould is being closed, at least the barrier layers of the multi-layer plastic elements are forced to flow into a shallow slot formed between the welding kerbs of the closed mould. A multi-part compression-blow-moulding mould comprises welding kerbs which, when the mould is closed, form a slot or space between them with a height of cross section that decreases towards the outside of the mould and which is extended by a shallow and broad slot intended to compress the plastic.

  • Patent number: 6793083
Abstract: A preblended additive composition and process for the preparation of polyester resins useful in the manufacture of plastic containers such as bottles is disclosed. The additive composition includes a cobalt-containing compound that is preblended with a phosphorous compound. The polyester resin, e.g., a PET resin, may be prepared by reacting ethylene glycol with dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) or terephthalic acid (TA) in an esterification reaction. The additive composition may be prepared by quickly dumping the phosphorus compound into the cobalt compound such as cobalt acetate, and the resulting composition is added to the reactor vessel before the polycondensation reaction. On the other hand, the additive composition may be prepared by slowly dumping the phosphorus compound into the cobalt compound over a period of at least 5 minutes. Such preblending substantially eliminates any yellow or blue color, or haze in the product article.

  • Patent number: 6787097
Abstract: A method and system for multiple-cavity gas-assisted plastic injection molding. Each of the mold cavities are oriented in the vertical direction with the valve gates for the plastic material being positioned at the lower vertical ends of the mold cavities. With four mold cavities, an “X”-shaped runner pattern is utilized, although an “H”-shaped pattern could also be utilized. The centerline of the manifold is offset from the centerline of the mold. Gas is injected through in-article gas pins positioned in the mold cavities. The direction of the melt front advance is vertical from the bottom of the mold cavities to the top of the cavities. The gas pin location is also at the gate end of the part, either at or forward of the gate or resin entry point.

  • Patent number: 6776953
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the forming of a hollow body. The process includes providing a forming mold comprising an upper mold and a lower mold which form a mold cavity having a cross-sectional contour in a closed state of the forming mold. The upper mold includes a roller. The hollow body is placed between the upper mold and the lower mold in an area of the mold cavity. The hollow body is preprofiled by moving at least one of the upper mold and the lower mold into the closed state at which time the roller comes into frictional contact with a surface of the hollow body running at an acute angle with respect to a direction of the movement of the at least one upper mold and lower mold. The preprofiled hollow body is then formed into a final shape corresponding to the cross-sectional contour of the forming mold by applying a hydraulic internal pressure into the preprofiled hollow body and expanding the hollow body while the upper mild and the lower mold are in the closed state.

  • Patent number: 6770238
Abstract: The method and the device are used for blow forming containers of a thermoplastic material. The preforms that are used are first temperature treated and then shaped into containers in the area of at least one blow station. Moulds to define the container shape are held by mould supports. At least two preforms are simultaneously shaped into containers within each blow station. Positioning of the preforms is done such that the preforms assume a positioning relative to one another when entering the blow station that differs from the positioning during the blow forming process. Spacing of the preforms relative to one another is changed during transport between entry into the blow station and blow positioning. In addition to this first change in spacing, a second change in spacing between adjacent preforms is performed relative to one another.
