The method includes detecting a need to transmit a second stream of symbols having higher priority than a first stream of symbols currently being transmitted from the packet transmitter to a packet receiver. The first and second streams of symbols are each part of a respective physical layer PDU. A dedicated tag is inserted after a recent-most transmitted symbol of the first stream of symbols. The dedicated tag indicates that the first stream of symbols is subjected to pre-emption at the physical layer. Symbols of the second stream of symbols are inserted following the dedicated tag for transmission of the second stream of symbols to the packet receiver.

It can be learned that, in the multi-link establishment method, the foregoing information is carried to improve multi-link establishment flexibility.

The second data sequence includes a transmitted data sequence, an encoded tag data sequence and the CRC preservation sequence. The CRC preservation sequence preserves the FCS of the transmitted data frame in the backscattered data frame. The FCS is usable to detect communication errors in the backscattered data frame.

Accordingly, copying a portion of the received packet through the host-to-device fabric and to a destination memory can be avoided and utilization of the host-to-device fabric can be reduced for accelerator bound traffic.
