  • Patent number: 7756717
Abstract: A system (10) for ensuring the quality of lubricating oil in an engine of a locomotive without the need for specialized diagnostic and fluid handling systems on the locomotive. A test portion (28) of lubricating oil is removed from the engine and is analyzed at an oil analysis center (26) to determine an oil quality parameter (32). The oil quality parameter is used as an input to a calculator (34) to determine a quantity of oil (36) that must be replaced by fresh oil during a current maintenance outage in order to ensure that the engine oil quality will remain acceptable throughout a forthcoming operating period. In this manner, a complete change-out of the lubricating oil may be delayed or avoided. The oil replacement decision and quantity is communicated to a service center (18) via a communications link such as the Internet (40) prior to the arrival of the locomotive at the service center.

  • Patent number: 7353088
Abstract: A system for detecting the presence of a human in a vehicle is provided. The system includes a vibration sensor that is configured to detect vibrations of the vehicle, and to output signals related to the sensed vibrations. A processor is configured to receive the signals output from the vibration sensor. The processor also operates a neural network that has a plurality of nodes, at least some of which are recurrent. • Patent number: 7164979
Abstract: A G sensor 31 generates a measuring value by measuring an impact acceleration applied to a vehicle. An A/D converter 32 converts the measuring value into a digital value with a resolution of K bits. A transmission interface 33 compresses the digital value into a compression digital signal of L bits being smaller than K bits. When the digital value is outside a given range from (2K?2L)/2 to (2K+2L)/2, the compression digital signal is generated by dividing the digital value by 2(K-L). When within the given range, the compression digital signal is generated without dividing the digital value. The compression digital signal corresponding to the digital value within the given range thereby maintains the resolution of K bits. Thus, even using the single G sensor, a resolution of a compression digital signal can be varied based on a low or high intensity level of G.

  • Patent number: 7130728
Abstract: A steer-by-wire steering apparatus for a vehicle has a first control system including a first ECU, and a second control system including a second ECU. Each ECU responds to manipulation of the steering wheel by a driver, and controls a steering motor. The first ECU determines whether the second control system is malfunctioning, and the second ECU determines whether the first system is malfunctioning. When any of the system is malfunctioning, the ECU of normally functioning system controls a counter force motor such that steering wheel receives a counter force that is different from that when both systems are functioning normally. Accordingly, the steering apparatus is capable of speedily and reliably causing a driver to realize a malfunction in the steering apparatus.
