  • Patent number: 7334445
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing an end lug of a spring member formed of a strand of wire, the strand of wire is initially gripped by two clamping jaws or a pair of tongs, held between said clamping jaws and, subsequently, at a predetermined distance behind the gripping tongs, while forming a rear wire segment protruding behind the spring element, is severed. In this regard, a shaping jaw conforming to the shape of the lug is employed as the one clamping jaw of the gripping tongs, around which the wire segment is bent by means of a shaping pin that can be inserted directly behind the other clamping jaw perpendicular to the longitudinal center line of the wire segment over the latter to form the lug. The relative movements between the shaping pin and the shaping jaw required for this purpose are generated by means of program-controlled movements of the gripping tongs and/or shaping pin.

  • Patent number: 7305861
Abstract: A single action press for forming a shell used to make a can end includes a first tool and an opposed second tool. The first tool includes a die center insert that performs a forming operation on disc cut from a sheet of end material. The first tool is configured and arranged wherein force is supplied to the die center insert during the downstroke and force is removed from the die center insert at the bottom of the downstroke and at the start of the upstroke, to thereby enable the die center insert to disengage from the shell. One specific embodiment uses a die center piston and compressed air to apply force to the die center insert. Another embodiment uses a cam and cam follower arrangement to remove axial forces at the bottom of the downstroke and either springs or gas pressure to apply force to the die center insert during the downstroke.

  • Patent number: 7290570
Abstract: A twist attachment device which is suitable for attaching a segment of fence wire such as a run of barbed wire to a fence post in the construction of wire fences. The device includes a frame within which is rotatably mounted a pair of spaced-apart wire twist gears each having a wire notch and a wire segment opening adjacent to the wire notch. A drive mechanism operably engages the wire twist gears to rotate the wire twist gears in the housing. In operation, an attachment wire segment is extended through the registering wire segment openings of the respective wire twist gears, after which a fence post is extended between the spaced-apart wire twist gears. The segment of fence wire to be attached to the fence post is then inserted into the registering wire notches of the wire twist gears.

  • Patent number: 7260972
Abstract: Sheet metal parts having significantly strained portions, such as aluminum alloy body panels, can be formed by a sequence of steps comprising preform shape stamping, preform annealing and final shape stamping. The shape of the desired part is analyzed to identify portions of the geometry that cannot be formed in a single stamping step without exceeding the straining limit of the metal. A preform shape is determined in which a substantial amount of strain is stamped without tearing and the preform is annealed to re-soften the strained areas and a final stamping step completes development of the final part shape.
