  • Patent number: 6394715
Abstract: A tool holder for releasably coupling a bit with a non-circular outer connector surface to a rotary driver. The tool holder includes a socket and a retaining mechanism coupled to the socket and operable in a retaining mode and a released mode. The socket includes a forward end with an opening extending rearwardly from the forward end. The opening also includes a non-circular cross-section adapted to receive the outer connector surface of the bit to couple the bit for rotation with the socket. The retaining mechanism is adapted to permit disposable of the bit into an operative position within the opening and to prevent axial movement of the bit out of its operative position when the retaining mechanism is in its retaining mode. The retaining mechanism is further adapted to permit axial displacement of the bit out of its operative position when the retaining mechanism is in its released mode.

  • Patent number: 6378877
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a chuck member to be mounted within the operating area of the machine tool and a work piece carrier that can be put onto the chuck member and clamped thereto. First positioning members provided on the chuck member and second positioning members provided on the work piece carrier cooperate to define the position of the work piece carrier along three coordinate axes each running perpendicular to each other as well as with regard to the angular orientation. A clamping mechanism fixes the work piece carrier member to the chuck member in the afore mentioned defined position. In order to ensure an increased resistance against tilting momenta and torque occurring during the machining of a work piece, the first positioning members are constituted by conical centering pins and the second positioning members are constituted by recesses in the shape of a two-stage groove having two shoulders.

  • Patent number: 6371701
Abstract: An apparatus having a controllable dwell for drilling and or countersinking a hole in a workpiece is provided which generally comprises a feed mechanism, a retraction mechanism, and a dwell mechanism. The feed mechanism is configured to feed a spindle from a starting position to a predetermined feed limit during a feed cycle. The retraction mechanism is configured to retract the spindle from the feed limit to the starting position to complete the feed cycle. The dwell mechanism is in communication with the retraction mechanism and comprises a mechanical bias member that stores energy during at least a portion of the feed cycle, wherein the mechanical bias member releases at least a portion of the energy once the spindle reaches the feed limit. The retraction mechanism is only actuated once the spindle reaches the feed limit and the mechanical bias member releases at least a portion of the energy.

  • Patent number: 6367814
Abstract: The apparatus for clamping a work piece in a well defined position within the operating area of a machine tool comprises a chuck member to be mounted within the operating area of the machine tool and a work piece carrier that can be put onto the chuck member and clamped thereto. In order to ensure an increased resistance against tilting momenta and torque occurring during the machining of a work piece, the clamping mechanism comprises a plurality of clamping devices.

  • Patent number: 6364580
Abstract: A hand-held power tool having a housing and an open top tray attached thereto is disclosed. The open top tray is oriented generally perpendicular to a handle axis for carrying small magnetic objects therein. Additionally, the tray is provided with a magnetic portion for retaining the small magnetic objects when the handle is inclined from a vertical position. Thus, the present invention allows small magnetic objects such as tool bits, drill bits, and fasteners to be carried on the hand-held power tool for quick and easy access by an operator.

  • Patent number: 6345939
Abstract: An apparatus for drilling structural shapes such as angles, I-beams and H-beams has sliders shiftable transversely to the beam along vertical and horizontal members of a frame through which the beam is passed. At least one of the sliders can have a rotatable carrier whose axis is perpendicular to the web or flange being drill and from which a respective drilling unit is radially offset. The longitudinal position of drilling is determined by the angular position of the carrier and any transverse offset is compensated by movement of the respective slider.

  • Patent number: 6341926
Abstract: A cutting tool includes a working portion adapted to cut a threaded hole or a hole in a predetermined workpiece, a first clamp portion provided at an end opposite to the working portion and adapted to be clamped by a clamping device to facilitate local application of force, and a weak portion disposed between the working portion and the first clamp portion and adapted to bear a torsional force smaller than that borne by other portions. The weak portion, during use of the cutting tool in a cutting operation, is always located on the surface of the workpiece and will break when the cutting tool cannot stand an excessive torsion. The broken portion will likewise always be located on the surface of the workpiece, whereby the user can easily clamp the portion exposed on the outside of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 6290241
Abstract: A fixed length collet chuck assembly for holding a workpiece in which the collet only translates radially and not axially is provided. The fixed length collet chuck has a longitudinal, central axis and includes a chuck body assembly and a collet. As a draw tube is pulled toward the spindle of a machine, such as a lathe, a tapered actuator forces ball bearings against a retaining plate and the ball bearings are forced radially outwards causing a taper ring to move axially away from the spindle and into contact with a bushing ring. The bushing ring is connected to a collet sleeve through three bushings which are radially and equally spaced around the longitudinal, central axis of the assembly. The inner surface of the collet sleeve tapers outward from the longitudinal, central axis of the assembly. A collet bears against the inner tapered surface of the collet sleeve.
