Patent number: 8434551Abstract: A solvent based gravity drainage process whereby the vertical growth rate of the chamber is restricted by placing, monitoring and managing a buoyant gas blanket at the top of the vapor chamber. The process reduces the heat loss to the overburden as well as providing a means to preserve a barrier layer of bitumen saturated reservoir sand at the top of the pay zone in reservoirs where there is limited or no confining layer present.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2009Date of Patent: May 7, 2013Assignee: N-Solv CorporationInventors: John Nenniger, Lowy Gunnewiek

Patent number: 8430161Abstract: Methods of producing a sour hydrocarbon gas via production tubing intersecting a reservoir, are described, one method including contacting an underground reservoir with an aqueous composition optionally comprising an additive, the reservoir comprising hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds; displacing the composition into the reservoir by forcing a fluid (which may be a non-hydrocarbon gas, or inert gas, or nitrogen, or argon, or mixture thereof), into the reservoir, or into the production tubing; and producing at least some of the hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds from the reservoir through the production tubing, the composition wetting the production tubing and preventing substantial deposition of elemental sulfur thereon.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2009Date of Patent: April 30, 2013Assignee: BP Corporation North America Inc.Inventors: Derry Eddy, Kean Zemlak

Patent number: 8403051Abstract: Emulsified acids have been used to increase production rates of oil and gas in carbonate reservoirs through acid fracturing and matrix acidizing operations. An emulsifier is used to emulsify the aqueous acid with an oil, usually diesel. Very small particles, such as colloidal clay particles and/or nanoparticles increase the stability of the emulsified acids over an elevated temperature range.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2010Date of Patent: March 26, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Tianping Huang, James B. Crews, John R. Willingham, Richard A. Mitchell, Kushal Seth

Patent number: 8387691Abstract: A method for recovery of hydrocarbons from a subterranean reservoir is described. Adjacent injector producer well pairs are operated under conditions of steam assisted gravity drainage with a lateral drainage well between them. The lateral drainage well is operated under conditions of intermittent steam injection and alternating oil, water and gas production. NCG is co-injected with steam at selected intervals and in selected quantities in order to control the steam saturation of the SAGD steam chamber and the rise of the steam chamber, and to encourage lateral fluid communication between the adjacent well pairs and the LD well to control the rise of the steam chamber.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2008Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: Athabasca Oils Sands CorporationInventors: Laura A. Sullivan, Caroline Heron, Harald F. Thimm

Patent number: 8365833Abstract: Wellbore devices for use in filtration, wellbore isolation, production control, lifecycle management and wellbore construction may include at least a first and a second shape-memory material each having a an altered geometric position and each an original geometric position. Each shape-memory material may include a polyurethane material held in the altered geometric run-in position at a temperature below glass transition temperature (Tg), where the Tgs and/or the respective slope changes of the first and second polyurethane materials are different. Once the wellbore device is in place downhole and the first and second shape-memory materials are subjected to temperatures above their Tgs, the materials will deploy and expand to recovered geometric positions at or near their original geometric positions to perform their filtration, isolation, control or other function. These deployments or expansions may occur at different times or rates.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2010Date of Patent: February 5, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Nicholas Carrejo, Michael H. Johnson

Patent number: 8356665Abstract: Methods are provided for improving the production of heavy/viscous crude oil from subterranean formations. The methods include secondary production through use of a displacement fluid (typically a waterflood) wherein the subterranean formation is subjected to cyclic periods of overinjection of the displacement fluid followed by underinjection of the displacement fluid, but keeping the overall cumulative voidage replacement ratio (VRR) within a defined range, typically targeted to be about 1. In some aspects, the initial production of such heavy/viscous crude oil is limited, if possible, followed this cyclic secondary production methodology. By keeping the initial production, VRR, and cumulative VRR in defined ranges, the expected ultimate recovery (EUR) can be optimized, and overall production increased for example by as much as 100% or more relative to conventional production methods.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2009Date of Patent: January 22, 2013Assignee: BP Corporation North America Inc.Inventors: Euthimios Vittoratos, Bradley W. Patent number: 8353342Abstract: Methods and apparatus relate to both generating steam for injection into a wellbore and capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) produced when generating the steam. A direct steam generator (DSG) makes the steam by contacting water with a combustion area for hydrogen and oxygen. Quantity of the steam made exceeds quantity of water input into the steam generator since the steam includes vaporized water resulting from combustion of the hydrogen and oxygen mixed with the water inputted and heated. Steam-methane-reforming or autothermal-reforming produces the hydrogen stripped of the CO2 prior to introduction into the steam generator. Further, an air separation unit supplies the oxygen to the steam generator.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2010Date of Patent: January 15, 2013Assignee: ConocoPhillips CompanyInventors: Edward G. Latimer, Steven A. Treese

Patent number: 4662459Abstract: Journal bearings are employed to rotatably support the roller cones of a drill bit for drilling wells or the like. Enough clearance is provided at the journal bearing between the bearing pin and the roller cone to accommodate a thick film of fluid lubricant. The bearing is sonically driven, preferably by means of a resonant vibration system, in a torsional vibration mode, the torsional energy being developed in an elastic column which receives such energy from an orbiting mass oscillator. The roller cone is also mechanically rotated by virtue of conventional rotary motion of the drilling string.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1985Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Inventor: Albert G. Bodine

Patent number: 4598778Abstract: A rock bit having a cutter retained on an axle through an array of rolling members interposed within an interior annular space therebetween, and a passage defining a passage wall for inserting the rolling members from the exterior of the bit to the interior space. A plug for closing the passage, and retaining the members in the space is welded at an end adjacent the bit exterior and a contamination excluding snap ring is interposed between the plug and the passage wall for preventing weld slag or weld material from entering the passage.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1985Date of Patent: July 8, 1986Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Albert E. Highsmith

Patent number: 4583596Abstract: A seat coacting with the flapper of a subsurface well safety valve which includes a solid metal annular seat and an annular flexible metal seal in a recess about the solid seat. The flexible seal has a base secured in the recess and a resilient sealing lip which is generally V-shaped in cross section with one end of one of the legs of the V being connected to the base and sealing against the side of the recess and the other leg extending downwardly beyond the solid seat for making contact with the flapper before the flapper seats on the solid seat. The solid seat and the sealing lip are directed downwardly at an angle with the angle of the sealing lip being greater than the angle of the solid seat.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1985Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Assignee: Camco, IncorporatedInventor: Jonathan P.
