  • Patent number: 6590905
Abstract: An implementation of packet data control protocol (PDCP) parameter negotiation in a universal mobile telephone communications service (UMTS) which can also be used to improve GSM/GPRS XID negotiation methods, where the timing for exactly when the new parameters are to take effect must be known includes either a GPRS-type reset solution or a PDCP-header based change indicator solution. In the GPRS-type reset solution, PDCP negotiations are made and then connections are reset to put into effect the new PDCP parameters for use. The second solution is to add a change indicator, e.g., a bit (C-bit) to the PDCP-PDU's header part. The originator informs using this bit that new parameter values are to take effect for use.

  • Patent number: 6591089
Abstract: The mobile station has a variable gain amplifier and adjusts a gain of the variable gain amplifier in accordance with a level data signal so as to transmit an output transmission signal for each of slots with transmission power control. The mobile station further has a compensation system for the transmission power control with respect to variance of environment surrounding to the mobile station and so on. The compensation system partially extracts the output transmission signal over each slot and carries out a logarithmic wave detection of the extracted transmission signal to produce a resultant signal of the wave detection. Then the compensation system calculates for each slot an average error of the resultant signal of the level data signal and corrects the level data signal with reference to the average error to produce a corrected level data signal as a newly level data signal.

  • Patent number: 6590873
Abstract: The invention is a method for controlling power on multiple forward link communication channels by using multiple power control sub-channels, wherein each power control sub-channel is associated with a forward link communication channel to be power controlled. A fundamental power control sub-channel and a supplemental power control sub-channel are time multiplexed onto a reverse pilot channel. Transmitted over the fundamental power control sub-channel is a fundamental power control bit for indicating to a base station to increase or decrease its transmission power over a corresponding forward fundamental channel. Transmitted over the supplemental power control sub-channel is a supplemental power control bit for indicating to a base station to increase or decrease its transmission power over a corresponding forward supplemental channel. The pilot sub-channels are preferably separated by the fundamental and supplemental power control sub-channels for time diversity purposes.

  • Patent number: 6587687
Abstract: The teaching of this invention pertains particularly to satellite communications systems using GSO or NGSO satellites. This invention employs data derived from signals of various types to derive a mathematical model of propagation related attenuation-inducing events so as to plan system resource allocation to minimize an amount of power required to close communication links between user terminals and the satellites. Disclosed are methods for modelling gateway to satellite links, as well as methods for modeling the user terminal to satellite links. This invention overcomes the problems inherent in the prior art by providing a direct measurement of severe path attenuation potential.

  • Patent number: 6587695
Abstract: A method is disclosed to distinguish a first type of control channel from a second type of control channel. The method includes steps of (a) transmitting a carrier of the first type of control channel so as to include a first symbol sequence that results, when demodulated, in a sine wave having a frequency with a first offset from the carrier; (b) transmitting a carrier of the second type of control channel so as to include a second symbol sequence that results, when demodulated, in a sine wave having a frequency with a second offset from the carrier; and (c) demodulating a received carrier and detecting whether the carrier includes the first type of control channel of the second type of control channel. In the preferred embodiment of this invention the first symbol sequence is an all zeroes sequence, and the second type of symbol sequence is an alternating ones and zeroes sequence, which results in the first offset being a positive offset, and the second offset being a negative offset.

  • Patent number: 6587680
Abstract: An existing security association is re-established when a communication handover event occurs in a radio communications system such as IEEE 082.11 or a HIPERLAN wherein the existing security association between a mobile terminal and a wireless communication network is maintained when the communication handover occurs within the network. Authentication during a handover event is achieved by a challenge/response procedure. In accordance with the challenge/response procedure each member of a communication pair that is made up of a new access point and the mobile terminal that is experiencing a handover to the new access point sends a challenge to the other member of the communication pair. Each member of the communication pair then calculates a response to its received challenge, and these responses are sent back to the other member of the communication pair. Each member of the communication pair then compares its received response to a correct response.

  • Patent number: 6587688
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for providing international numbers in order to implement international cellular roamer service. When a roamer registers, the Visitor Location Register (VLR) serving the roamer, queries the Home Location Register (HLR) record of the roamer. The HLR tests whether the VLR is in a foreign country. If so, the HLR provides numerical information, such as the roamer's billing number, in international form, including the country code of the HLR. Advantageously, the VLR is provided with international numbers where appropriate, and the roamer can be accommodated outside the roamer's home country.

  • Patent number: 6587694
Abstract: Clocks between at least two wireless devices are synchronized to reduce the need to transmit synchronization signals over a wireless communication channel therebetween. Two wireless devices synchronize their respective clocks with each other when each are electrically coupled, e.g., during a cradle time when brought into physical contact with each other through charge contacts, e.g., to recharge a remote portable unit. The charge signal appearing at the charge contacts is driven to create a time duration marked by a start transition and an end transition in the charge signal. The number of clock pulses of each of the two wireless devices during the time duration is counted, and compared to determine the difference in clock speeds of the wireless devices. The frequency of the clock of at least one of the wireless devices is adjusted to bring the difference in the clock speeds within a predetermined threshold tolerance level.

  • Patent number: 6584316
Abstract: Telephone calls are handed off from a wireless network to a wireline network under the control of a subscriber. When at a given location, the subscriber enters the directory number of the wireline terminal (typically the closest) to which a future wireless call is to be transferred. The entered directory number is then stored in memory in the subscriber's wireless terminal with the current location of the subscriber as determined by a satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) for future use. If the subscriber wants to transfer a call to a wireline terminal, the subscriber selects a transfer handoff key on the subscriber's wireless terminal. After the subscriber's location is determined using the GPS, it is then determined if a directory number (DN) of a designated wireline terminal has previously been entered and stored in memory for the subscriber's present location.

  • Patent number: 6584330
Abstract: Equipment and/or functions at a node (e.g., base station) of a cellular telecommunications network are turned off or put into sleep mode during periods of low traffic in order to reduce power consumption by the node. The equipment and/or functions are then turned back on again during periods of high traffic load in order to provide the required service to users. Exemplary actions which can be taken in order to save power during the power saving mode include, for example and without limitation: 1) switching off or putting to sleep one or more MCPAs, 2) turning off one or more carriers, 3) turning off one or more sectors with regard to a frequency, 4) turning off or putting to sleep at least a portion or part of one or more circuit boards, and/or 5) reducing fan speed based upon traffic load of the node. Any one or more of these or similar actions may be taken in order to enable the node to save power when its traffic load is at a low level. Power consumption can thus be reduced.

  • Patent number: 6580899
Abstract: The present invention provides greater capacity in a dynamic allocation of power. First, the invention requires the reduction, not the increase, of signal power in low traffic areas. Because this signal power reduction reduces interference in surrounding high traffic cell site areas, those high traffic cell site areas can re-direct some of this surplus power to support a greater voice and data traffic load. Accordingly, the invention increases capacity of voice and data communications in high traffic areas, where it is needed most, by lowering (and dynamically regulating) the signal power in low traffic cell site areas.
