The electronic circuit is configured to measure a single-ended voltage relative to ground that is formed on at least one of the electrodes in the pair in response to the electrical current, and, based on the measured voltage, to assess physical contact between the at least one of the electrodes and tissue. The circuit board includes the current source and the electronic circuit, and includes a layout that produces, at the selected frequency, a predefined capacitance between the current source and ground, thus forming a reference for measurement of the single-ended voltage.

In one embodiment, the force and energization metrics can be used as feedback to establish a desired contact force and energization level combination to prevent steam popping.

The shaft includes a plurality of shaft channels, an extendable electrode in each channel, and a collar with a protruding flange that interfaces with a port when the electrode assembly is within the lumen. An electrode actuator controls actuation of the electrodes. The collar and actuator are interfaced via a keyed structure. A plurality of ports in the assembly interface with the lumen and project the electrodes outward through the catheter and into the prostate when actuated. The electrodes are extended in a predefined rotational orientation relative to the keyed structure. A power source is coupled to the electrodes and delivers direct current to the prostate.

The first target temperature may be optimized for vessel sealing and the second target temperature may be optimized for clamp arm pad life. The control circuit may determine that transection is complete by determining that the ultrasonic blade contacts the clamp arm pad.
