  • Patent number: 6816507
Abstract: In order to improve the performance of physical channels in telecommunications systems using wire-free telecommunication between mobile and/or stationary transmitting/receiving appliances as a function of; the channel data transmission rate, the system environment, the system utilization and the distance between the transmitting/receiving appliances, such that no circuitry changes are required to the transmitters and/or receivers in the transmitting/receiving appliances, an air interface is proposed, in which the number of NPILOT bits, NTPC bits and NTFCI bits are each variable, and in which, in particular during an active or passive telecommunications link between the mobile and/or stationary transmitting/receiving appliances in the telecommunications system, the number of NPILOT bits, NTPC bits and NTFCI bits can each be varied and/or optimized adaptively by control means, such as by suitable “layer 2” or “layer 3” signaling (“layer 2/3” signaling) which takes place, for

  • Patent number: 6816510
Abstract: A method and system for synchronizing clocks in a packet network that includes a master node and at least one slave node that communicate with one another is disclosed. A timer value from a master clock is retrieved upon transmission of a first packet to the slave node. The timer value and an associated code are subsequently sent to the slave node in a subsequent packet. After receiving the first packet, the slave node, retrieves a timer value from a slave clock and associates it with an identifying code of the first packet. After receiving the subsequent packet, the slave node relates the timer values and adjusts a clock value of the slave clock accordingly. An interrupt scheme may be used to implement the retrieval of the timer values.

  • Patent number: 6788686
Abstract: A method to restore the original order of packets in an end-to-end data flow after the flow has been multiplexed over a set of communication or switching paths whose available bandwidth varies significantly over time. To convey the relative path ordering, the method considers all possible path pairs. For each such path pair it enumerates the packet block transmissions, i.e., the sequences of packets transmitted on a selected path of the given path pair which are not interleaved by the packets transmitted on the other path of the same pair. Packet block enumeration for each path pair is performed independently and does not take into account any packets transmitted on the other paths. A packet transmitted on a given path carries a set of packet block identifications for each path pair the given path belongs to. Increasing the range of the packet block enumeration, the robustness of the method can be adjusted to an arbitrary level of packet loss tolerance.

  • Patent number: 6788689
Abstract: Connection distributors are used to route packets corresponding to multiple streams of packets through a packet switching system. During each time slot, one packet is typically sent from each packet stream. During the configuration of a packet stream, a time slot and primary route is determined for the packet stream. The primary route is a route through the packet switch which is non-blocking with other packet streams during the assigned time slot. During a common frame, a packet of each packet stream is sent out of a line card or packet interface to be routed through the packet switch over the designated primary route. During subsequent frames, packets are sent over different routes through the network (until all routes are used and then the cycle repeats). These routes are selected based on a deterministic method so as to maintain the non-blocking characteristic of the primary route selection.

  • Patent number: 6785298
Abstract: A method of detecting a transmission rate in a wireless communication terminal employing a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) scheme, comprising the steps of: decoding and encoding, at a selected transmission rate, a frame signal corresponding to a data frame currently received by a de-interleaver from a modulator-demodulator (modem) in response to the reception of the data frame; comparing the encoded frame signal with the current frame signal being received from the modulator-demodulator, and as a comparison result, determining whether there are errors in an amount less than a predetermined threshold value; transmitting a signal indicative of the selected transmission rate to a vocoder if there are errors in an amount less than the predetermined threshold value, and determining whether the reception of all data frames is complete; returning to the encoding and decoding step if the reception of all data frames is not complete; and, selecting another transmission rates other than the previously selected tra

  • Patent number: 6768739
Abstract: A router allowing the entry hit probability of the cache to be increased is disclosed. The cache is searched using a different mask for each cache entry. A maximum or optimum cache prefix length is determined as a length of upper bits of the destination address of the received packet which are not masked by a corresponding mask. Alternatively, the cache is searched using longest prefix match (LFM). A cache entry allowing a plurality of destination addresses to be hit can be registered in the cache, resulting in increased cache hit probability.

  • Patent number: 6728234
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for maintaining a time reference which is governed by a high clock frequency produced by a first clock frequency generator, in which a changeover is essentially made, for a changeover time period, to a low clock frequency produced by a second clock frequency generator. The apparatus of the invention maintains the time reference governed by the high clock frequency, wherein a changeover is made to the low clock frequency for a specific changeover time period. The invention is advantageously used to save power in electronic apparatus such as in mobile stations of mobile radio systems.

  • Patent number: 6728211
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are also disclosed for responding to received flow control messages indicating a previously congested port is now in a non-congested state. Many different components that have packets to send to a particular output will receive an indication that they are now allowed to send these packets at roughly the same time as the other components. If all components start sending at the same time, then the packet switch might become congested, possibly very quickly. If the packet switch cannot respond and transmit flow control messages to all of these sources fast enough, certain internal buffers could overflow and thus packets might be lost. On implementation causes components to start sending to the destination at varying times to gradually increase the traffic being sent to the destination.

  • Patent number: 6721787
Abstract: A wireless hot-sync system includes a personal digital assistant (PDA) having a transceiver for communicating over a wireless link, a hot-sync server having a transceiver for communicating with the PDA over the wireless link and a network interface for communicating with devices on a local area network (LAN), and a host system connected to the LAN. Upon receipt a hot-sync request from the PDA via the wireless link, the hot-sync server opens a network connection with the host system to establish a wireless hot-sync channel. The PDA and the host system exchange packets containing synchronization data, which is used by each device to update a local data set to bring it into correspondence with the data set of the other device. Upon completion of the wireless hot-sync, the hot-sync server closes the network connection and disables the hot-sync channel.

  • Patent number: 6674771
Abstract: In a transmission method and apparatus, low-speed SDH signals are multiplexed into a high-speed SDH frame, the high-speed SDH frame including at least an information payload, a line overhead and a section overhead, the section overhead being divided into a first section overhead SOH and a second section overhead SOH, the first SOH carrying regenerator SOH bytes and the second SOH carrying multiplex SOH bytes. The multiplex SOH bytes in the second SOH of the high-speed SDH frame are detected without changing the line overhead and the payload when the high-speed SDH frame reaches a receive-side high-level line terminating equipment. The multiplex SOH bytes in the second SOH of the high-speed SDH frame are generated without changing the line overhead and the payload before the high-speed SDH frame is transmitted by a transmit-side high-level line terminating equipment.

  • Patent number: 6643298
Abstract: A system and method for re-mapping the Packet Identifier (PID)'s for a set of MPEG-2 single program streams prior to multiplexing onto one multi-program transport stream. The system eliminates any ambiguity when generating the multiplexed transport stream in 10 order to avoid PID conflicts when multiplexing several single programs containing non-unique PID values. The system includes a mechanism to assign new PID values, in such a way that it ensures that all new PID's are unique for the multiplexed transport stream. Furthermore, it performs this re-mapping in real-time as the packets are being transmitted over the multi-program transport stream.
