Abstract: A preferred embodiment biosensor is a multi-layer micro-porous thin film structure. Pores in a top layer of the micro-porous thin film structure are sized to accept a first molecule of interest. Pores in a second layer of the micro-porous thin film structure are smaller than the pores in the top layer and are sized to accept a second molecule of interest that is smaller than the first molecule of interest. The pores in the second layer are too small to accept the first molecule of interest. The pores in the top layer and the pores in the second layer are sized and arranged such that light reflected from the multi-layer micro-porous thin film structure produces multiple superimposed interference patterns that can be resolved. In preferred embodiments, the multi-layer micro-porous thin film structure is a porous silicon thin film multi-layer structure formed on a silicon substrate, such as a silicon wafer. Specific and nonspecific binding can be detected with biosensors of the invention.

Abstract: Provided are ejaculum of animals as medicinal materials and uses thereof in manufacture of medicaments for treatment of various tumors, depression, senile dementia, and dermatosis. Said tumors include ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, osteocarcinama, etc. The present medicinal material, alone or in combination with additional agents, is similar to cyclophosphamide in antineoplastic effects, which is accepted presently the most potent chemotherapeutic agent. It can inhibit the growth of tumors, not destroying the normal immune system of human. The present medicinal material of ejaculum is powdery crystal prepared by vacuum lyophilization from fresh ejaculum of animals, and it is suitable to a variety of dosage forms such as capsule or oral solution.
Abstract: The invention relates to an alcoholic fermentation process in the presence of one or more high alcohol tolerant yeast and one or more maltotriose positive yeast. The process of the present invention can be a fermentation process for the production of ethanol, for the production of beer, for the production of wine and the like. in a preferred embodiment, the present invention relates to a process for the production of ethanol in the presence of distiller's yeast and baker's yeast.

Abstract: Provided herein are methods of recovering oil from microorganisms. The methods are useful, for example, in obtaining nutritional oils and/or lipid biofuels. The methods of recovering oil described herein include contacting a population of microorganisms with one or more enzymes under conditions that cause disruption of the microorganisms, concentrating the disrupted microorganisms, and extracting lipids from the disrupted microorganisms at high temperature in the presence of a salt and in the absence of solvent.
Abstract: Disclosed is a multi-chamber applicator comprising an aqueous gelatin solution and an aqueous cross-linking agent solution in separate chambers.

Abstract: The present invention provides an in vitro blood vessel model for investigation of drug induced vascular injury and other vascular pathologies. The in vitro blood vessel model provides two channels separated by a porous membrane that is coated on one side by an endothelial cell layer and is coated on the other side by a smooth muscle cell layer, wherein said model is susceptible to the extravasation of red blood cells across said porous membrane due to drug induced vascular injury.

Abstract: A method of screening for increased risk of fatal prostate cancer in a subject comprises providing a blood sample collected from the subject, and then detecting the presence or absence of an increased level of serum calcium in the sample. An increased level of serum calcium indicates the subject is at increased risk of fatal prostate cancer.

Abstract: A method for assaying bilirubin in which a dry reagent is used, which is capable of accelerating the reaction of bilirubin oxidase, and an assay instrument to be used in the method for assaying bilirubin, are provided. The method for assaying bilirubin is characterized in that a biological sample and a bilirubin oxidase-containing dry reagent are mixed first, and then the mixture obtained and a surfactant-containing dry reagent are mixed. An assay instrument (1) to be used in bilirubin assay is characterized in that a bilirubin oxidase and a surfactant are arranged in any of a sample supply part (11), passages (12, 13, 14), and a detection part (15) in a manner such that the bilirubin oxidase is positioned closer to the sample supply part (11) than the surfactant is.
Abstract: Improved flow cytometer system particularly adapted to use for sex-selected sperm sorting include enhanced sheath fluid and other strategies which minimize stress on the sperm cells, including a 2.9 percent sodium citrate sheath solution for bovine species and a hepes bovine gamete media for equine species. Improved collection systems and techniques for the process are described so that commercial applications of sperms samples as well as the resulting animals may be achieved.
