  • Patent number: 6658462
Abstract: A system, method and program stores, in a local cache, only a small part of a large file that is being requested over a network such as the Internet. In a preferred embodiment, the caching agent starts transferring this partial file to the client while it is simultaneously retrieving the remaining portion of the file across the Internet. A preferred embodiment of the invention stores a first page of the browser display in the cache. Other embodiments store more than the first page, or a part of the full file or document, thereby creating a safety margin in storing more than one page. Another preferred embodiment initially stores the full file or document, and if there is a need for cache replacement, the cache is replaced up until the first page is reached. As such, the cache space requirements are minimized for large documents being retrieved over the World Wide Web.

  • Patent number: 6643250
Abstract: Resilient members absorb vibrations to limit transmission of vibrations from a chassis to a base of a disk record/playback device. A restricting device limits transverse movement of the base on the resilient members. The restricting device limits sloping of a disk mounted on the record/playback device, and thereby prevents interference of the mounted disk with other disks in a storage device. By minimizing the sloping of the disk, the minimum required clearance from the disk mounted on the turntable is reduced and the available vertical space for use in storing disks is maximized. A compact design is possible permitting conformity to constrained dimensions such as standard DIN dimensions in vehicles.

  • Patent number: 6629148
Abstract: A system and method for balancing loads in a computer system is disclosed. The system and method assess the health of various paths in a computer system by determining the health or status of at least two layers on each path. A health or status of the paths is then determined based on the information of the health of each layer in the path. A load balancing device routes information for processing to the various paths based on the determined health of the paths. To better estimate the health of a path, algorithms which weight the health signals for each layer are used giving greater weight to layers of greater importance. The system and method can also add or remove additional paths if the combined health of the existing paths is determined to be above or below a predetermined value. In addition, the weight of certain layers can be locked in to provide for updating of specific layers.

  • Patent number: 6594702
Abstract: Provided herein is a name service that includes published data that is associated with one or more duration entities and one or more modification entities, enabling the name service to more efficiently manage access to published data. To publish data, a publishing client transmits a publication request to a name service. The publication request may specify a modification entity and a duration entity. The name service creates at least one name entry that associates the published data with the modification entity and the duration entity. There are several requests to modify or depublish published data that a name service will honor only when they originate from a modification entity. These are (1) requests to modify published data, and (2) requests to depublish published data. A name service depublishes published data based on the termination of the duration entity that is associated with the published data, when, for example, a garbage collector detects that the duration of an entity has ended.
