    Abstract: A process is provided for the continuous production of nonwoven webs in cylindrical or sheet form from thermoplastic fibers, spinning the fibers continuously from a melt onto a rotating mandrel and winding them up on the mandrel to form a generally spirally wound cylinder. Density of the wound cylinder is controlled by controlling the distance between the rotating mandrel and the orifices of the spinning die through which the molten polymeric material is spun. If the spinning of the fibers is continuous, the cylinder can be formed in a continuous length. Control of the spinning rate in relation to the diameter and rate of rotation of the mandrel and the rate of advance of the cylinder on the mandrel controls the thickness of the cylinder. The cylinder can be drawn off the mandrel and used as a cylinder, or either slit lengthwise and opened out, or collapsed onto itself, for use as a sheet. The process is particularly adapted for forming filter elements.

    Abstract: A cermet film includes metal particles in an insulator with the metal particles having an average diameter of from about 30A to about 120A. The cermet film has a high resistivity, and low temperature coefficient of resistivity, and is stable under electric fields of up to 10.sup.5 volts/cm. The cermet film can be formed by co-sputtering the metal and the insulator onto a substrate. The sputtered cermet film is then annealed in a reducing atmosphere whereby its resistivity is increased without a corresponding change in its temperature coefficient of resistivity.

    Abstract: Methods of preparing fluid mixtures in a chamber under close temperature and pressure controls in which liquid water is introduced into the chamber along with gases selected from the group consisting of oxidizing and reducing gases for providing in the liquid water a mixture of carbon dioxide, hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and of oxidizing and carburizing gases for providing in the liquid water a mixture of carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen and carbon monoxide under reaction conditions. The liquid water in the chamber is maintained under close temperature control of from about 32.degree. F. to about 160.degree. F. and gases in the chamber are maintained under control pressures from ambient atmospheric up to 218.5 atmospheres so that a saturated fluid mixture is generated having predetermined properties as determined by the controlled temperatures and pressures.

    Abstract: A joint having improved snag resistance and peel strength is formed between overlapping end portions of a thermoplastic strap. The thermoplastic strap is formed into a loop having overlapping inner and outer end portions which are joined to one another by a resolidified thin layer of formerly melted material from each of the overlapping strap end portions. Resolidified material extends completely to an inwardly tapered end of the outer strap end portion to provide the improved joint. A resolidified mass of formerly molten material also is present in front of the tapered end to further protect it against snagging.

    Abstract: A preconsolidated tape of continuous, high strength filaments in a metal matrix is coated with a layer of adhesive polymer and cut into shaped plies. The coated plies are stacked in a mold and resin bonded together by the application of heat and pressure. Many of the desirable physical properties of a diffusion bonded metal matrix article are also found in the resin bonded metal matrix article of the subject invention. Also, the use of preconsolidated adhesive coated plies eliminates the need for high diffusion bonding pressures and temperatures, thereby cutting the time involved for the bonding and molding operation by a factor of 8 in some instances.
