  • Patent number: 8297960
Abstract: To provide a reliable solid-liquid separating method and apparatus for a slurry, even though the solid component of the slurry is finely divided particles and/or of a shape difficult to entangle, without exudation through gaps in processed portions and, also, with no need to exercise a maintenance work such as replacement of filters, a solid-liquid separating apparatus includes a mold having a cylindrical inner peripheral surface, a gate for opening and closing a second open end of the mold, and a pressing rod slidable into the mold to compress the slurry. Sheet-like fibrous filters are placed on a leading end face of the pressing rod and an inner surface of the gate to seal gaps between the mold and the pressing rod and between the gate and mold. With the filters so placed, the slurry within the mold unit is compressed to provide a solidified product, thereby accomplishing solid-liquid separation.

  • Patent number: 8209998
Abstract: SiO2 slurry for the production of quartz glass contains a dispersion liquid and amorphous SiO2 particles with particle sizes to a maximum of 500 ?m. The largest volume fraction is SiO2 particles with particle sizes of 1 ?m-60 ?m, as well as SiO2 nanoparticles with particle sizes less than 100 nm constituting 0.2-15% volume by weight of the entire solids content. To prepare the slurry for use and optimize its flow behavior for later processing by dressing or pouring the slurry mass, and for later drying and sintering without cracks, the slurry has SiO2 particles with a multimodal distribution of particle sizes, with a first maximum in the range 1 ?m-3 ?m and a second maximum in the range 5 ?m-50 ?m, and an 83%-90% solids content by weight of the SiO2 particles and the SiO2 nanoparticles together.

  • Patent number: 8181488
Abstract: Method for overcladding an optical fiber preform with a given target diameter (D0) of the final preform includes providing a primary preform to be overcladded, and successively depositing first overcladding layers by projecting and vitrifying silica particles on the primary preform moving in relative translation with a plasma torch. Each first overcladding layer has a given uniform thickness (d) and is deposited at a given, constant silica particle flow rate and at a given, constant translation speed. The method also includes the detection of a preform diameter (D1) greater than a given threshold (S) and the deposition of a final overcladding layer having the remaining required thickness (D0?D1) at a constant silica particle flow rate and at a reduced translation speed. The inventive method enables a preform to be overcladded efficiently with improved yield and high quality.
