    Abstract: A method for conditioning the felts in a papermaking process utilizing deinked secondary fiber in the furnish by adding a felt conditioner consisting of from 5-33% of a nonionic surfactant, from 5-33% of a dispersant, or blends thereof, with the remainder water; wherein the nonionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated nonylphenols having moles of ethoxylation of from 7.5 to 30 and an HLB of about 12 to 17.2 and di-alkyl phenol ethoxylates having moles of ethoxylation of from 15 to 24 and an HLB of about 13 to 15.1; and wherein the dispersant is selected from the group consisting of the sodium salt of naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde-condensate having an average molecular weight of from about 700 to 3500, the potassium salt of polymerized alkyl naphthalene sulfonic acid having an average molecular weight of approximately 1000, or the sodium or ammonium salt of lignosulfonate. Additionally, from 1 to 5% of an alkylether hydroxypropyl sultaine enhances performance.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an improved press felt conditioning treatment which controls the deposition of polymerically flocculated particulate substances in a press felt. The treatment comprises applying to the felt an effective inhibiting amount of a conditioner comprising a combination of a polymethylnaphthalene sulfonate and a type A phosphate ester comprising a nonyl phenol hydrophobe based phosphate ester having between 6 and 10 moles of ethylene oxide and a mono to diester ratio of approximately 60 to 40 or a type B phosphate ester comprising a tridecyl alcohol hydrophobe based phosphate ester having between 6 and 10 moles of ethylene oxide and a mono to diester ratio of about 60 to 40. The use of this combination was found to be especially effective at preventing the deposition of polymerically flocculated particulate substances in a press felt and paper machine.

    Abstract: This invention relates to process for inhibiting deposition of aluminum hydroxide in felts of a papermaking system which comprises adding to the felts an effective inhibiting amount of a hydroxylated carboxylic acid having at least 1 hydroxyl group and at least 2 carboxyl groups. The molecular weight of the carboxylic acid is from about 100 to about 200 and, preferably, the carboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of tartaric acid, malic acid, citric acid, mesoxalic acid, tartronic acid and tetrahydroxy succinic acid. The use of these carboxylic acids in combination with surfactants provides an especially effective aluminum hydroxide inhibiting and total felt conditioning process when both components are applied to the felt.
