  • Patent number: 8171983
Abstract: A mold for the continuous casting of blooms, slabs or billets is provided with a mold tube (2) and a supporting shell (4) surrounding said mold tube. The mold tube (2) is supported by support profiles (15) on the supporting shell (4) extending in its longitudinal direction and distributed over the periphery and is positively connected thereto via connecting profiles (20) extending in the longitudinal direction. The connecting profiles (20) are respectively configured as profile strips (21, 22) outwardly projecting from the outer periphery of the mold tube (2) and inwardly projecting from the inner periphery of the supporting shell (4), which engage in one another such that in the peripheral direction of the mold a clearance is present. As a result, the stresses, permanent deformation and fatigue cracks produced by the thermal expansion in the mold tube are substantially avoided.

  • Patent number: 7631684
Abstract: The invention relates to a continuous casting installation, for example for steel billet and bloom formats having substantially rectangular or circular cross-section. The invention improves the strand structure in the corner areas, to avoid rhomboidity, cracks and dimensional imperfections of the strand cross-section while achieving a high throughput capacity per strand and reducing investment and running costs. The fillets of the groove curvatures in the die cavity amount to a proportion of the length of the side of the strand cross-section. The degree of curvature 1/R of the groove curvatures decreases in the direction of the strand at least along at least partial length of the entire casting die, thereby achieving gap elimination between the casting shell and the casting die wall and/or a targeted casting shell shaping in the area of the groove curvature.

  • Patent number: 7422049
Abstract: In the continuous casting of round or polygonal billet and bloom formats, use is made of moulds the mould cavity of which comprises a copper tube (3) which is intensively cooled by means of water-circulation cooling. In order to increase the cooling capacity on the one hand and the dimensional stability of the mould cavity (4) on the other hand, and also extend the total service life of the copper tube (3), it is proposed to provide the copper tube (3) with a supporting shell (12) or supporting plates over the entire circumference at the tube outer lateral surface (5). For the cooling of the copper tube (3), cooling ducts (6) for guiding the cooling water are arranged on the copper tube (3) or on the supporting shell (12). The cooling ducts (6) are distributed over the entire circumference at the tube outer lateral surface (5) and extend substantially over the entire mould length.

  • Patent number: 7222658
Abstract: A die cavity of a casting die, such as for continuously casting billets, blooms and blanks. The die cavity has a cross-section with a partially curved peripheral line, whereby, with the cavity walls cooled, provides improved heat exchange between a forming strand shell and the die cavity wall, thus avoiding solidification defects in the strand shell. The degree of curvature 1/R is reduced at least on part of the curved peripheral line of the corner regions from peripheral lines of the same corner regions, that are successive in the casting direction, and at least over part of the length of the die, in the concave corner regions of the die cavity, in order to control the targeted closure of the gap between the strand shell and the cooled die cavity, or a targeted strand shell deformation.

  • Patent number: 6289973
Abstract: A continuous casting installation comprises an ingot mould and an oscillating holding device used for causing the ingot mould to swing when in a casting position. The installation consists, in a separable manner, of an interchangeable part and a stationary part. To replace the intechangeable part, it is separated from the stationary one and moved using a conveying means, at least along a partial path, from its position of operation into an area beneath the casting position. This enables, especially in the multiline casting installations, the interchangeable part to be transported during the casting process and, for example, along paths comprising straight or arciform segments, to any purposefully selected position and to be replaced by a new interchangeable part to be replaced in multiline installations with no interference with the casting process in any adjacent ingot arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5615731
Abstract: In the case of a continuous casting mould for a double T-shaped preliminary section comprising a mould cavity cross-section which is composed of two flange parts (4, 4') and a web part (5) firstly sticking of the billet in the mould is to be prevented and secondly simplified mould production is to be indicated. Furthermore it should be possible to produce sections of this type in tubular moulds, with high casting speed and high billet quality such that their dimensions are as close as possible to the final dimensions. To this end it is proposed that the mould cavity (3) be provided at the mould end on the pouring-in side, on both sides along the web (5) in each case with a cross-sectional enlargement, in the form of bulges (8), with respect to the identical mould cavity portion (7) at the mould end on the billet outlet side.

  • Patent number: 5469910
Abstract: Molten steel is continuously teemed into a casting passage to establish a bath of molten steel in the passage. The molten steel is partially solidified in the casting passage to form a strand having a plurality of bulges which are uniformly distributed circumferentially of the strand. The strand is continuously withdrawn from the casting passage and the bulges are deformed during strand withdrawal so as to reduce bulge size. The amount of deformation is regulated by varying the bath level as a function of one or more casting parameters.

  • Patent number: 5131453
Abstract: A curved-mold continuous casting apparatus has a reciprocable mold with a curved casting passage and an arm which guides the mold for reciprocation. A secondary cooling unit is located downstream of the mold and is followed by a withdrawal-and-straightening unit. The apparatus further has a rigid, curved dummy bar, a piston-and-cylinder unit for moving the dummy bar between a storage position and a casting position, and a lever which is articulated to the dummy bar and guides the same. A support consisting of a bedplate with an upright stand holds the mold, guide arm, secondary cooling unit, withdrawal-and-straightening unit, dummy bar, piston-and-cylinder unit and lever in assembled condition and in alignment for casting. The support and the components carried thereby form a preassembled, transportable module which can be brought to a casting location or removed from such location.

  • Patent number: 3946630
Abstract: A pendulum shear for a continuous casting installation wherein the shear is provided with a mechanical drive for a pulse-like cutting operation, a knife or cutter rigidly connected with the pendulum and movable by a driven crank towards a second knife. Further, there is provided mechanism for accelerating the pendulum out of its rest position at approximately the maximum knife opening in the direction of travel of the strand, this mechanism, prior to the cutting operation, accelerating the pendulum at its cutting region to a speed approximately corresponding to the speed of travel of the strand. The mechanism for the acceleration of the pendulum consists of a guide arranged at the stand or housing and guides the pendulum along its path between the rest position and the start of the cutting operation, and the cooperation of this guide with the pendulum moved by the crank controls such acceleration.
