Patent number: 11662083Abstract: Provided is a modular light fixture. The device includes a light shroud, a light fixture base having a first cylindrical housing, a second cylindrical housing, a quick disconnect with a pair of external pins, and a light fixture base supporting attachment that includes a pair of P-shaped channels. The shroud attaches to the first cylindrical housing, and the base attachment attaches to the base via the P-shaped channels and the first and second external pins. The shroud and base attachments can be interchanged as desired for use as a hanging light, an up light, a down light, a well light, a path light, a wash light, or any combination thereof. The device allows for quick and easy conversion of lights from one style to another without requiring an entirely new fixture, enables simple repairs, and lessens the number of items required to be stocked by an installer.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2022Date of Patent: May 30, 2023Inventor: Adam Steele

Patent number: 11466660Abstract: A downwind morphing rotor that exhibits bending loads that will be reduced by aligning the rotor blades with the composite forces. This reduces the net loads on the blades which therefore allow for a reduced blade mass for a given maximum stress. The downwind morphing varies the amount of downstream deflection as a function of wind speed, where the rotor blades are generally fully-aligned to non-azimuthal forces for wind speeds between rated and cut-out conditions, while only the outer segments of the blades are generally aligned between cut-in and rated wind speeds. This alignment for large (MW-scale) rated turbines results in much larger downstream deflections of the blades at high wind speeds as compared to that of a conventional rigid single-piece upwind turbine blade.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2019Date of Patent: October 11, 2022Assignees: University of Virginia Patent Foundation, The Board of Trustees of the University of IllinoisInventors: Eric Loth, Michael S. Selig, Adam Steele

Publication number: 20140113144Abstract: The invention relates to a superhydrophobic coating composition containing a polyurethane; a fluoropolymer; a nanofiller; and an organic solvent. The polyurethane to fluoropolymer are present in a weight ratio from about 1:2 to about 15:1. Coated substrate having at least a portion of one surface coated with a hydrophobic coating using the superhydrophobic coating composition are disclosed as are methods for forming a superhydrophobic coating on a substrate. The invention also relates to a method of forming a superhydrophobic coating on a surface of a substrate by spray casting a superhydrophobic coating composition onto a surface of a substrate to form a coating using an ultrasonic nozzle or at an air pressure of about 20 to about 60 psi and from a height of about 3 to about 12 inches above the surface to form a coating, and curing the coating.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 8, 2012Publication date: April 24, 2014Applicant: UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA PATENT FOUNDATIONInventors: Eric Loth, Adam Steele, Ilker Bayer

Publication number: 20130320202Abstract: A method for aligning the axis of an atom beam with the orientation of an electric field at a particular location within an enclosure for use in creating a charged particle source by photoionizing a cold atom beam. The method includes providing an atom beam in the enclosure, providing a plurality of electrically conductive devices in said enclosure, evacuating the enclosure to a pressure below about 10?6 millibar, and aligning the axis of the atom beam with the orientation of the electric field, relative to each other, within less than about two degrees. Alignment may be facilitated by applying at least one voltage to the electrically conductive devices, mechanically tilting the atom beam's axis orientation of the electric field relative to each other and/or causing a deflection of the atom beam.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2013Publication date: December 5, 2013Applicant: United States of America, as represented by the Secretary of Commerce, NISTInventors: Jabez McClelland, Brenton Knuffman, Adam Steele

Publication number: 20130064663Abstract: A downwind morphing rotor that exhibits bending loads that will be reduced by aligning the rotor blades with the composite forces. This reduces the net loads on the blades which therefore allow for a reduced blade mass for a given maximum stress. Also provided is a pre-aligned configuration rotor whereby the rotor geometry and orientation does not change with wind speed, and instead is fixed at a constant downwind deflection consistent with alignment at or near the rated wind speed conditions. Also provided is a twist morphing rotor where the airfoil-shapes around the spars twist relative to the wind due to aerodynamic forces so as to unload the rotors when there is a gust. This can help reduce unsteady stresses on the blade and therefore may allow for reduced blade mass and cost. The twist morphing rotor may be combined with either downwind morphing rotor or pre-alignment rotor.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2012Publication date: March 14, 2013Applicant: UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA PATENT FOUNDATIONInventors: Eric Loth, Michael Selig, Adam Steele
