  • Patent number: 9091782
Abstract: Resistivity logging tool module systems and methods enable efficient logging string assemblies and logging operations. In some of the disclosed embodiments, a resistivity logging tool module includes a mandrel with a connector section at each end and a ring support section between the connector sections. The resistivity logging tool module also includes a composite layer disposed around the ring support section. A set of ring electrodes is positioned along the ring support section around the composite layer, wherein the composite layer electrically isolates the ring electrodes from the ring support section. One of the modules of the multi-module resistivity logging tool includes an adaptor in an isolation joint configuration with one of its connector sections. A related assembly method includes obtaining a mandrel with a connector section at each end and a ring support section between the connector sections. The method also includes disposing a composite layer around the ring support section.

  • Publication number: 20150068298
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for use in power generation, including a fluid-flow-driven power generator for use in a fluid-containing pipe such as a drill pipe as used in oil and gas exploration and extraction. Parts of the generator are removable from the pipe—for example while a drill pipe is downhole within a drilling well—to leave a clear through bore for survey and fishing operations and to enable replacement of the removed parts. The flow-driven generator comprises an impeller connected to a magnet assembly to rotate the magnet assembly when fluid flows past the impeller. This causes relative movement between the magnet assembly and an adjacent electrical coil assembly, the relative movement and magnetic coupling generating an electrical current in the coil assembly. This generated electrical current is used to power electrical devices within the pipe.

  • Patent number: 8973675
Abstract: A system for containing electronics positioned in a downhole tubular. The system includes a pressure housing, a rigid end piece, a compliant end piece, an inner tubular member, one or more annular standoffs, and a chassis. The pressure housing is supported within the downhole tubular. The rigid end piece and the compliant end piece are fixedly coupled within opposing ends of the pressure housing. The inner tubular member is disposed within the pressure housing and has opposing ends. One of the opposing ends is coupled to the rigid end piece, and the other of the opposing ends is free to move relative to the compliant end piece. The chassis is disposed within the inner tubular member and houses the electronics. Each standoff is disposed between the inner tubular member and the pressure housing and includes at least one radially extending portion compressed therebetween.

  • Publication number: 20120139250
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for use in power generation, including a fluid-flow-driven power generator for use in a fluid-containing pipe such as a drill pipe as used in oil and gas exploration and extraction. Parts of the generator are adapted to be removable from the pipe—for example while a drill pipe is downhole within a drilling well—to leave a clear through bore for survey and fishing operations and to enable replacement of the removed parts. The removable part may be a flow control assembly, which includes an adjustable flow control nozzle or which receives any one of a set of different size nozzles.

  • Publication number: 20120038115
Abstract: A sealing system between a tubular and a chassis. In some embodiments, the sealing system includes a sealing member and an outer ring. The sealing member is compressed between the chassis and the tubular. The sealing member has a temperature and comprises a resilient material that is expandable as the temperature increases and contractible as the temperature decreases. The outer ring is displaceable to close an annulus between an outer surface of the outer ring and the inner surface of the tubular by expansion of the sealing element, whereby the sealing member is prevented from extruding into the annulus. Further, the outer ring comprises a compliant material that is deformable under load from the sealing element as the sealing element expands.
