  • Patent number: 10708731
Abstract: The provision of dual mode services is facilitated. Access to the dual mode services is controlled by associating a mobile device to an access point. Subscribers are required to provide valid geographical addresses for access points associated with the mobile devices prior to provision of service. Consequently, physical addresses are necessarily available for emergency services (e.g., E911). Mobile devices are restricted to specific access points based upon the access point identifiers automatically provided during initialization of service and maintained for authorization purposes.

  • Patent number: 6778499
Abstract: A method and apparatus for smoothing bit rate transitions in a bursty input data stream. The method includes the steps of receiving the input data stream in a buffer, periodically measuring the occupancy level of the buffer and withdrawing the contents of the buffer at an output rate. In a simple embodiment of the invention, the output rate is increased if the buffer occupancy level is above a threshold occupancy level and decreased if the buffer occupancy level is below a second threshold intensity, where both threshold occupancy levels are dependent on the current output rate. The output rate is made dependent on the buffer occupancy level, which allows the output data stream to have smoother data rate transitions than does the input data stream. As a result, there is little degradation of service quality to other users of the system upon establishing the bursty connection and problems related to convergence of power levels across the entire system are practically eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6603746
Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer-readable storage medium for use in a communications system wherein the transmit power of a wireless link is adjusted so that link performance meets a target level. The method consists of dynamically adjusting the target level as a function of the traffic characteristics of the link. It may be executed at a base station or mobile unit. To perform the method, the apparatus or storage medium (a) computes a threshold instantaneous performance parameter as a first function of a measured instantaneous performance parameter, a measured instantaneous bit rate and at least one target error performance parameter; and (b) generates a power control command based upon a second function of the measured instantaneous performance parameter and the threshold instantaneous performance parameter. This provides a smoothing effect of the interference induced to other users and may result in increased cell capacity.

  • Patent number: 6031880
Abstract: A method of carrier recovery in a wireless communications system using a known synchronization word, for example an IS-54 TDMA system, operates in two stages to produce an estimate of carrier phase. In the first stage, a complex fading factor, embodying carrier phase information, is estimated from the synchronization word in the received signal using a least square criterion. In the second stage, the carrier phase is estimated from this complex fading factor by averaging. The averaging can provide a recursive average or a moving average, or can be implemented using Kalman filtering which also provides an estimated amplitude factor and frequency shift. The method and apparatus provide a substantial improvement over phase locked loop carrier recovery.

  • Patent number: 5991273
Abstract: Diversity path signals, each comprising time division multiplexed symbols in a time slot including known symbols constituting a reference signal, are combined with respective weights to reduce co-channel interference. The weights are determined, from a correlation matrix and a reference signal correlation vector, using a sliding window starting with synchronization symbols and/or CDVCC (coded digital verification color code) symbols as the known symbols. SINR (signal to interference plus noise ratio) is determined for each window position from elements of the correlation matrix and the reference signal correlation vector. The determined SINRs are averaged through the time slot, over a plurality of time slots, and for the diversity paths to provide an accurate determination of SINR within a short period. The SINR provides a reliable signal quality parameter that is useful in a cellular communications system for procedures such as hand-off, adaptive channel allocation, dynamic power control, and cell tiering.

  • Patent number: 5838742
Abstract: Diversity path signals, each comprising time division multiplexed symbols in a time slot including known symbols, are combined with respective weights to reduce co-channel interference. Initial weights are determined, using a window on the known symbols, to optimize signal to interference plus noise ratio. These weights are used to determine symbols adjacent to the window, and the window is changed to include determined symbols and the weights redetermined. This process is repeated with the window being moved progressively, preferably with successive positions overlapping, throughout the time slot. The initially known symbols can comprise synchronization symbols and/or CDVCC (coded digital verification color code) symbols. Desirably, both can be used with respective windows being moved in opposite directions through symbols between them to provide two results for each such symbol, the better one of which is selected in dependence upon a monitoring of possibly averaged errors for the symbols.
