    Abstract: A vehicle chassis is controlled remotely using a drive-by-wire system and a propulsion system, such as fuel cell technology. The remote control feature takes advantage of drive-by-wire technology in that the control signals used in powering, driving and controlling a chassis are electrical as opposed to mechanical signals. In this manner, the electrical impulses are used to remotely control the vehicle, which enables remote movement of the chassis during manufacturing, assembly, and shipping, as well as parking and docking and undocking of the chassis with a corresponding body.

    Abstract: A body panel includes a hood portion configured to extend over and across a vehicle front compartment, and two fender portions. A unitary, one-piece inner panel and a unitary, one-piece outer panel cooperate to define the hood portion and the two fender portions. The inner panel and the outer panel comprise a substantial portion of a vehicle body front end, replacing the multitude of inner panels, outer panels, and reinforcements in a prior art vehicle body. The body panel preferably functions as a load-bearing vehicle frame portion, reducing or eliminating prior art vehicle frame components. A method of manufacturing the body panel includes forming an inner panel and an outer panel using superplastic forming, quick plastic forming, or sheet hydroforming, and connecting the inner panel and the outer panel.

    Abstract: A method of designing and manufacturing vehicle bodies includes establishing a common, standardized interface system for attaching vehicle bodies to vehicle chassis wherein connection components are arranged in a predetermined spatial relationship on the bodies and chassis to facilitate selective attachment of any of a plurality of different body types to the chassis. A plurality of different bodies are designed and manufactured having different body types and configured to conform to the standardized interface system for attachment to chassis which also conform to the standardized interface system. The vehicle bodies can be produced independently of the chassis. Eliminating the chassis and its hardware from the body manufacturing process can reduce current vehicle manufacturing plant sizes and system complexity. The result is an enabler to produce many vehicle bodies that can be distributed directly to dealers, customers, etc. either with or without a specified rolling platform.
