Patent number: 11815094Abstract: Rotary positive displacement machines based on trochoidal geometry that includes a helical rotor that undergoes planetary motion relative to a helical stator are described. The rotor can have a hypotrochoidal-based cross-sectional shape, with the corresponding stator cavity cross-sectional shape being the outer envelope of the rotor cross-sectional shape as it undergoes planetary motion, or the stator cavity can have an epitrochoidal-based cross-sectional shape with the corresponding rotor cross-sectional shape being the inner envelope of the stator cross-sectional shape as it undergoes planetary motion. Such machines can be configured so that the stator axis is spaced from the rotor axis, the rotor is configured to spin about its axis and the stator is configured to spin about its axis, and/or the rotor and the stator are held at a fixed eccentricity so that the rotor undergoes planetary motion relative to the stator, but does not orbit.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2021Date of Patent: November 14, 2023Assignee: Rotoliptic Technologies IncorporatedInventors: Greg John Montie, Peter Thomas Christopher Suke, Adrian James Corless, Bryan Allen Callaway

Patent number: 7412994Abstract: This application relates to a fuel dispensing system and method for safely regulating transfer of fuel between a fuel dispenser and a fuel recipient. The fuel dispensing system may be used, for example, to replenish electric vehicles that use refillable electrochemical power generation systems, such as fuel cell hybrid systems using hydrogen fuel. The system employs a combination of interlocks and other safety features specifically adapted for high-risk indoor environments. Fueling cannot commence until the dispenser and the recipient are electrically bonded to minimize the risk of spark generation. The system may include, for example, a fuel supply subsystem for preventing fuel flow except during a fueling session, an immobilization subsystem for preventing relative movement of the dispenser and the recipient during a fueling session, a communication subsystem for enabling data exchange between the dispenser and the recipient, and a leak detection subsystem for monitoring the fueling site for fuel leaks.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2006Date of Patent: August 19, 2008Assignee: Cellex Power Products, Inc.Inventors: Adrian James Corless, Noel Christopher Buckley, Darrin Grant Elliott, Carolyn A. Lawrence, David Reinhold Pfeil

Patent number: 6753106Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for distributing water produced by the electrochemical reaction to ion-exchange membranes in an array comprising a plurality of electrochemical fuel cell stacks. Water distribution within individual fuel cell stacks within the array is improved to reduce membrane dryness near the oxidant stream inlet and to also reduce saturation of the oxidant stream near the oxidant stream outlet, thereby reducing electrode flooding. The method comprises periodically reversing the oxidant stream flow direction within at least one of the plurality of fuel cell stacks. The apparatus comprises an oxidant stream flow switching device for periodically switching the flow direction of an oxidant stream through an individual fuel cell stack. In one embodiment the apparatus further comprises a water recycler for capturing water from the oxidant exhaust stream and returning the captured water to the oxidant stream when the flow direction is reversed.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2001Date of Patent: June 22, 2004Assignee: Ballard Power Systems Inc.Inventors: Clarence Y.F. Chow, John Ka Ki Chan, Adrian James Corless

Water distribution within a fuel cell is improved to reduce membrane dryness near the oxidant stream inlet and to also reduce saturation of the oxidant stream near the oxidant stream outlet, thereby reducing electrode flooding. The method comprises periodically reversing the flow direction of an oxidant stream through a fuel cell flow field. The apparatus comprises an oxidant stream flow switching device for periodically switching the flow direction of an oxidant stream through a fuel cell flow field. In one embodiment the apparatus further comprises a water recycler for capturing water from the oxidant exhaust stream and returning the captured water to the oxidant supply stream when the flow direction is reversed.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1997Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Ballard Power Systems Inc.Inventors: Clarence Y.
