  • Patent number: 4996966
Abstract: An engine is provided with a mechanical supercharger which is disposed in an intake passage of the engine and is driven by the output power of the engine. The supercharger is connected to and disconnected from the output power of the engine by a clutch. The engine has intake and exhaust valves which are opened and closed with an overlap time. A valve timing changing mechanism changes the overlap time in order to change the amount of air communicated between the intake and exhaust ports.

  • Patent number: 4889082
Abstract: An intake system for a multiple-cylinder engine has first and second branch passages, a plurality of discrete intake passages for connecting the cylinders to one of the first and second branch passages, an intake air supply passage, an upstream side communicating passage for communicating the first and second branch passages with each other and with the downstream end of the intake air supply passage, and a downstream side communicating passage for communicating the downstream side ends of the first and second branch passages with each other. The firing order is set so that the cylinders connected to each of the branch passages do not fire one after another. The first and second branch passages and the upstream side and downstream side communicating passages forming a circular passage for supercharging the engine by resonance tuning effect of intake air.

  • Patent number: 4846117
Abstract: A intake system for a multiple-cylinder engine having a plurality of cylinders has a common intake passage open to the atmosphere at its upstream end, a plurality of discrete intake passages which communicate the respective cylinders with the common intake passage by way of intake ports, and a circular passage which is communicated with the cylinders and is adapted to propagate pressure waves generated by the intake strokes without reflecting the pressure waves. A part of the circular passage which does not form a part of the intake air path through which intake air is introduced into the cylinders is smaller in cross-section than a part of the circular passage which forms a part of the intake air path.

  • Patent number: 4811231
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided with a fuel injection valve in an intake passage communicated with a combustion chamber and a swirl controlling device for controlling a swirling motion to be given to intake air in a circumferential direction of the cylinder forming the combustion chamber. When the engine load is low, the fuel injection valve is controlled to inject fuel by an amount required for one power stroke a predetermined time after the intake valve is opened and during the intake stroke, and the swirl controlling device is controlled to give intake air a swirling motion. A correction device is provided, which, when the engine is cold, controls the fuel injection valve to start fuel injection before the intake valve is opened and also controls the swirl controlling device to suppress production of swirling motion of intake air.

  • Patent number: 4714063
Abstract: An intake system for an internal combustion engine comprises a first valve provided to open and close an intake passage leading to each combustion chamber, a bypass passage for introducing intake air into each combustion chamber bypassing the first valve, and a second valve provided to open and close each of the bypass passages. The first valves are operated to close the respective intake passages in a light load range and to open the same in a heavy load range. The second valve is operated to close the bypass passage in the middle of each intake stroke. The first valves are controlled so that the opening of the intake passages is increased as the engine load increases after exceeding a predetermined value, and the second valve is controlled to delay the time the bypass passage is closed with increase in the engine load so that the time the bypass passage is opened overlaps with the time the intake valve is opened when the engine load reaches the predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 4658792
Abstract: The combustion chamber for an internal combustion engine is formed by a main combustion chamber defined by a recess formed in a part of the lower face of a cylinder head and a squish zone which is a narrow space formed between the top surface of the piston in the top dead center and the substantially flat portion of the lower surface of the cylinder head around the recess. A spark plug is disposed in a position near the squish zone. A fuel injection valve is provided to inject fuel into an intake passage communicated with the combustion chamber by way of an intake valve. The fuel injection valve is controlled, at least when the engine load is low, to inject fuel by an amount required for one power stroke and to terminate fuel injection before the middle of the intake valve opening time at latest so that stratification of air and fuel can be obtained in which rich mixture is accumulated in the lower portion of the combustion chamber and lean mixture in the upper portion of the same.

  • Patent number: 4656988
Abstract: A fuel supply control system for an automobile engine comprises a detector for detecting change in engine operating condition, a fuel adjuster for variably controlling the amount of fuel to be supplied to the engine, an A/F ratio setting device for setting the lower or higher A/F ratio of a combustible mixture than the critical A/F ratio to a higher or lower A/F ratio than a critical A/F ratio at which the engine can produce substantially the same or intermediate torque as that produced by the same engine with the supply of such combustible mixture, and a control operable in response to an output from the detector to control the fuel adjuster in such a way that, at the time the engine is desired or required to be switched from one engine operating condition to another, the A/F ratio lower or higher than the critical A/F ratio can be rapidly adjusted to the higher or lower A/F ratio set by the A/F ratio setting device and, thereafter, the A/F ratio can be progressively adjusted to a target or desired value.
