  • Patent number: 6744007
Abstract: This invention provides a laser welding method capable of supplying a filler wire to a welding object portion in a stabilized condition so as to stabilize welding quality. More specifically, the filler wire is supplied to the welding object portion while the laser beam is projected to the welding object portion. At this time, the filler wire is supplied obliquely from forward or backward in the welding advance direction such that the angle between the supplying direction and beam axis L of the laser beam is less than 45°.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 18, 2002
Date of Patent: June 1, 2004
    Assignee: Komatsu Ltd.

  • Patent number: 5590829
Abstract: A movable backing system enables it to continuously, easily perform full penetration welding along a weld line in a confined space, irrespective of the length, configuration and other factors of a weld zone. A weld backing, which has a backing member disposed on the side facing a workpiece and cooling means disposed inside the weld backing for cooling the backing member, is so supported on a wheeled carriage as to be movable toward the workpiece. The weld backing is provided with follower elements which are always in contact with the underside of the workpiece and which turn following the movement of the workpiece to keep a predetermined gap between the underside of the workpiece and the weld backing so that desired bead thickness can be obtained. The wheeled carriage is moved synchronously with the movement of the welder to continuously perform full penetration welding.

  • Patent number: 5449107
Abstract: A reusable weld backing capable of withstanding long use, which is held against the underside of a workpiece to provide weld-metal support in full penetration welding, the weld backing comprising a substrate made from copper or a copper alloy; and a copper-aluminum alloy layer containing 9 to 23% by weight of aluminum and formed at least on the surface of the substrate, the surface being on the side which faces a weld zone.
