  • Patent number: 5776316
Abstract: A liquid redistribution system for redistributing liquid descending in a packed distillation column in which liquid is distributed from one side of the column to the other side of the column and vice-versa. To this end, a plurality of parallel, spaced apart liquid distributor elements provide inlet openings for receiving the liquid as it descends and outlet openings located on the underside of the distributor elements for discharging the liquid from the inlet openings. Channels provide flow communication between the inlet and outlet openings.

  • Patent number: 5641436
Abstract: A liquid-vapor contact column comprising an outer tubular shell and a plurality trays supported within the tubular shell to intimately contact an ascending vapor phase with the descending liquid phase. An alignment of the active portions of the trays can produce a counterflow pattern in the vapor phase, opposite to the direction of flow of the liquid phase. This results in an increased hydraulic gradient taken from the outlet to the inlet of the tray. In order to inhibit the ascending vapor phase from flowing in the counterflow direction the active portions of the trays are staggered.

  • Patent number: 5525271
Abstract: A liquid-vapor contact device having a plate-like body provided with a central section formed of expanded metal construction. The expanded metal construction provides slit-like openings for the vapor to ascend through the plate-like body and mix with liquid traversing the plate-like body. Tongue-like flow deflectors associated with the openings impart momentum to the vapor in a flow direction taken from inlet and outlet segments of the plate-like body. A plurality of elongated members overlie the central segment of the plate-like body. The plurality of the elongated members define channels running from the inlet and outlet segments which are preferably outwardly curved to ensure complete liquid distribution across the plate-like body. In addition, flow impedance members in the form of cut and bent tabs impede the flow of liquid across the plate-like body while flinging liquid against side surfaces of the elongated members to produce a falling film and therefore a secondary mechanism for liquid-vapor contact.

  • Patent number: 5269976
Abstract: A liquid-vapour contact column includes an array of vertically spaced horizontal liquid-vapour contact trays having generally circumferential sides and arrangement of downcomers to conduct liquid from each tray in the array to the tray below. Each tray has gas passages to enable gas to pass into contact with the liquid. A weir is disposed on the floor of at least one downcomer. Each side of the weir is spaced from the corresponding side of the downcomer. This arrangement counteracts a tendency for liquid flowing along the floor of the downcomer to become detached from the sides of the downcomer, such detachment leading to maldistribution of liquid on the tray and hence to less efficient operation of the column.
