Abstract: Electronic apparatus, such as a mobile telephone, under control of a microprocessor (7) and having a set of menu-selectable functions. Each function has an address associated therewith. The user can enter a particular address using a keyboard (3) to select one of the functions. A look-up table (10) is included for converting the user-input address to a function address. For example, the look-up table may correlate input address 03 with function address 08 so that when the user enters 03 the function at location 08 is actually selected. The look-up table can easily be reconfigured to provide different sets of menu-selectable functions for different product variants without having to modify the operating software (or associated hardware) in each case.

Abstract: Apparatus for remotely programming a radio telephone with identification data. The apparatus receives and decodes DTMF signals indicative of the identification data and controls storage of the identification data at predetermined memory locations in the radio telephone.

Abstract: A mobile telephone includes a memory (11) in which both a telephone number and an associated name can be stored. The telephone includes a visual display (8) and a keypad (9) with a plurality of keys (9a) each having a number and several (eg three) alphabet characters associated therewith. In a first data entry mode a telephone number may be entered into the memory (11) by pressing the respective numeric keys (9a) once in turn. In a second data entry mode a name may be entered and appended to the telephone number by pressing the relevant key (9a) an appropriate number of times. For each key one key press displays the first letter, two key presses displays the second letter, and three key presses displays the third letter associated with that key. In a data retrieval mode, however, a data item to be searched is entered by pressing only once for each character the respective keys (9a) having the desired character associated therewith.
