Patent number: 4887001Abstract: The present invention provides an improvement in the appearance of a cathode-ray tube including a rectangular faceplate with an exterior surface having curvature along both the minor and major axes. The faceplate also includes a cathodoluminescent screen on an interior surface thereof. At least in the center portion of the faceplate, the curvature along the minor axis is at least 10 percent greater than the curvature along the major axis. Points on the exterior surface near the ends of the major axis, at the edges of the screen, lie in a first plane which is perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the tube; points on the exterior surface near the ends of the minor axis, at the edges of the screen, lie in a second plane which is spaced from and parallel to the first plane; and points on the exterior surface near the ends of the diagonals of the rectangular faceplate, at the edges of the screen, lie in a third plane which is spaced from and parallel to the first plane.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1989Date of Patent: December 12, 1989Assignee: RCA Licensing CorporationInventors: Ralph J. D'Amato, Richard H. Godfrey, Albert M. Morrell, Frank R. Ragland, Jr.

Patent number: 4694216Abstract: A cathode-ray tube has a faceplate panel joined to a funnel thereof along a sidewall of the panel, and has an internal magnetic shield disposed therein proximate an inner surface of the funnel and connected along one end thereof to a back portion of a shadow-mask frame oriented orthogonally to a central axis of the tube and supported adjacent the sidewall. An apertured shadow mask is connected along an edge thereof to a front portion of the shadow-mask frame opposite the back portion. Along the direction of the central axis, the one end of the magnetic shield overlaps the corresponding edge of the shadow mask around substantially all of the shadow-mask frame.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1986Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Assignee: RCA CorporationInventor: Albert M. Patent number: 4634247Abstract: The present invention is an improvement in a method of screening a line screen slit mask color picture tube. Such method includes coating a faceplate panel of the tube with a photosensitive material, inserting a slit shadow mask into the panel and exposing the photosensitive material by passing light from a line light source through the slits of the mask. Such method further comprises positioning a generally cylindrical shaped lens between the line light source and the faceplate panel during exposure of the photosensitive material. The longitudinal axis of the lens is oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the line light source. The improvement comprises moving both the faceplate panel and the cylindrical shaped lens in synchronization in a direction parallel to the line light source during the exposing step.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1985Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Assignee: RCA CorporationInventors: Albert M. Morrell, Walter D. Masterton, Richard C. Bauder

Patent number: 4631441Abstract: An improvement is made in a color picture tube having a substantially rectangular slit-aperture type shadow mask mounted therein in spaced relation to a substantially rectangular cathodoluminescent line screen. In the specific improvement, the cathodoluminescent lines of said screen, in front plan view, first increase in curvature with an increase in distance from the minor axis of the screen and then decrease in curvature with further increase in distance from the minor axis, to become substantially straight at the short sides of the screen.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1985Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: RCA CorporationInventors: Albert M. Morrell, Walter D. Masterton

Patent number: 4620133Abstract: Compact deflection yoke in self-converging display system encircles adjoining segments of neck and funnel sectons of color picture tube having close beam spacing (200 mils) in electron gun to achieve low S-spacing dimension between converging beams in deflection center plane. Neck diameter is sufficiently large (1145 mils) to accommodate main focusing lens having major transverse dimension more than three and half times the beam spacing in the electron gun. Main focusing lens is formed between final focus electrodes having recessed apertures at juxtaposed ends. Walls of successive recesses have "racetrack"-like and "dogbone"-like contours. Asymmetric beam forming lenses provide each beam traversing the main focusing lens with asymmetric cross-section having relatively reduced vertical dimension.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1982Date of Patent: October 28, 1986Assignee: RCA CorporationInventors: Albert M. Morrell, Richard H. Hughes, William H. Barkow

Patent number: 4271247Abstract: A tube of the shadow mask type having a line screen and a slit aperture mask wherein the slits are arranged in columns and the slits in each column are separated by web portions of the mask is improved by the addition to the screen of light absorbing material in patches located only in alignment with the webs.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1980Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Assignee: RCA CorporationInventor: Albert M. Morrell

Patent number: 4173729Abstract: The tube includes an improved shadow mask contoured with step risers therein separating active portions of the mask. The risers are aligned with electron beam paths within the tube.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1977Date of Patent: November 6, 1979Assignee: RCA CorporationInventors: Robert P. Stone, Albert M. Morrell

Patent number: 4162421Abstract: A cathode-ray tube of the vertical line screen, slit apertured mask type includes a mask wherein the horizontal curvature of the mask is made greater than that suggested by the prior art for similar type tubes. Because of the added curvature, the degree of electron beam misregister caused by mask doming is reduced. To obtain acceptable packing of the screen lines, the horizontal center-to-center spacing between adjacent apertures in the mask are varied in relation to the difference in mask-to-screen spacing with respect to the prior art. The additional mask curvature need not necessarily be in a single arch but also may take the form of parallel extending corrugations in the mask.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1977Date of Patent: July 24, 1979Assignee: RCA CorporationInventor: Albert M. Morrell

Patent number: 4146816Abstract: The tube is improved by the shadow mask having an apertured active portion of parallel corrugations and integral corrugated skirt portions extending from the two opposite corrugated edges of the mask and having hinge means therein for interconnecting the mask to the envelope of the tube.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1977Date of Patent: March 27, 1979Assignee: RCA CorporationInventor: Albert M.
