  • Patent number: 9105783
Abstract: A solar concentrator receives sunlight for generating solar power with the concentrator including holographic optical element (HOE) separators for separating sunlight into separated bands, including HOE concentrators for concentrating the separated bands into concentrated bands, including HOE reflectors for reflecting the concentrated bands as reflected bands onto a multiple junction photovoltaic solar cell for generating the solar power with reduced aberrations of the bands for improved conversion of the solar light into the generator solar power, all of which can be constructed in an integrated structure using spacers, waveguides, and a substrate, where the HOEs use chirp Bragg gratings for reducing optical aberrations of the separated, concentrated, and reflected optical bands, with the option of multiple HOE separators for receiving sunlight from various angles of incidence.

  • Patent number: 7551818
Abstract: A chirped grating is made in a thin film layer or a glass layer for producing a holographic optical element within the layer well suited for use as an optical coupler for coupling side fired laser light into optical fibers for laser light pumping of optical fibers with the grating made in the layer by generating interference fringes burned into the layer with interference fringes created from interfering a reference laser beam with a plurality of convergent laser beams from respective lenses of an array of lenses.

  • Patent number: 7469082
Abstract: A transmissive holographic optical element including a chirped grating is used to inject light by side firing laser light from a an array of laser diodes into an optical fiber with a reflective HOE reflecting the injected laser light through and along the optical fiber with the transmissive holographic optical element HOE and reflective HOE sandwiching a portion of an optical fiber for increased laser side firing pumping efficiency in optical fibers.

  • Patent number: 6912360
Abstract: A free space point-to-multipoint optical transceiver has a reflective element and an optical feed mounted on the reflective element. When the optical feed is coupled to a light source, the optical feed is positionable to direct light received from the light source onto a reflective surface of the reflective element. Light directed onto the reflective surface is reflected towards a remote location to be received by a receiver located at the remote location. By adjusting a position of the optical feed, the reflected light is aimed. Therefore, adjusting the position of the optical feed provides a technique to track moving remote locations and/or to target different remote locations.

  • Patent number: 6597476
Abstract: A free space optical transceiver includes a first holographic optical element (HOE) device having a first recorded interference pattern to diffract a received light signal into a plurality of orders. A second HOE device has a second recorded interference pattern and is positioned relative to the first HOE device to reflect the orders of the diffracted light signal towards corresponding optical components. Use of the reflected orders in this manner in conjunction with the optical components provides the transceiver with multiple functionalities, such as communication, tracking, and alignment. Also, the first and second HOE devices have their interference patterns recorded on an emulsion material that is shaped to provide a common aperture through which to pass a transmitted light signal, thereby adding to the overall compactness of the transceiver.

  • Patent number: 6487022
Abstract: A device that controls and reshapes optical signals generated by a laser or sent through fiber optic cables for eventual broadcast to various sectors. The optical train transforms the input Gaussian beam into a flat-top beam, a beam with a uniform intensity distribution. The device can operate either in a super broadband sector spectral output mode, which is a combination of independent orders of diffraction, or be extended to operate as a multi-beam system, where spatially separated beams are obtained at the output of the transmitter. In accordance with aspects of the present invention, both the point-to-sector and multi-beam schemes can be obtained from a single source.
