  • Patent number: 8103300
Abstract: A system, method, and media for providing group communication services to an ad-hoc group formed according to vicinity with other users of communication devices in a communication system. Communicating among a communication group of a plurality of wireless communication devices in a communication system includes forming the communication group including transmitting an invitation including group membership location criteria to join the communication group to the plurality of wireless communication devices. The group membership location criteria is evaluated at each of the plurality of wireless communication devices receiving the invitation and the communication group is formed by ones of the plurality of wireless communication devices that meet the group membership location criteria. Permission to transmit to others of the plurality of wireless communication devices of the communication group is granted to one of the wireless communication devices of the communication group.

  • Patent number: 7881444
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method provide voicemail service using a packet data messaging service such as multimedia message service (MMS). Upon detecting that the presence status of a destination device is “unavailable”, the voicemail message is recorded at an origination mobile station and transmitted in a packet data message through a packet data messaging service center such as a multimedia messaging service center (MMS-C). If the destination device is a destination mobile station subscribing to the packet data messaging service, the packet data message is deposited in the destination mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20090080451
Abstract: Techniques for performing priority scheduling and admission control in a communication network are described. In an aspect, data flows may be prioritized, and packets for data flows with progressively higher priority levels may be placed at points progressively closer to the head of a queue and may then experience progressively shorter queuing delays. In another aspect, a packet for a terminal may be transferred from a source cell to a target cell due to handoff and may be credited for the amount of time the packet has already waited in a queue at the source cell. In yet another aspect, all priority and non-priority data flows may be admitted if cell loading is light, only priority data flows may be admitted if the cell loading is heavy, and all priority data flows and certain non-priority data flows may be admitted if the cell loading is moderate.

  • Publication number: 20070060130
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a wireless communication device and method for using the device. The wireless communications device may be used by accessing information in memory, the information relating to a first communications network. The information, along with one or more reference signals from a second communications network, is used to determine whether the wireless communications device is in the vicinity of the first communications network.

  • Publication number: 20070021126
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device that measures characteristics or attributes of a first communications network that vary according to physical location within that first communications network to create a fingerprint, or signature, of a location within the first communications network. When the fingerprint of the current location of the mobile device is created it can be compared to a known fingerprint associated with a second communication network to determine the mobile device's proximity to the second communications network. Furthermore, the second and subsequent fingerprint that are generated for a particular communications network can be used to modify the stored fingerprint so as to refine it to improve detecting the proximity to the communications network.

For example, the first communications network may be a CDMA wide area wireless communication network and the second communications network may be a 802.11 wireless LAN.

  • Publication number: 20050287993
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method provide voicemail service using a packet data messaging service such as multimedia message service (MMS). Upon detecting that the call has been diverted to the voicemail server, rather than using a real-time voice connection to record a voicemail message, the voicemail message is recorded at an origination mobile station and transmitted in a packet data message through a packet data messaging service center such as a multimedia messaging service center (MMS-C). If the destination device is a destination mobile station subscribing to the packet data messaging service, the packet data message is deposited in the destination mobile station. Where the destination device is a device without access to the service, the packet data message is forwarded to a destination address in a voice mail server associated with the voicemail box of the destination device.
