  • Patent number: 6472457
Abstract: Methods for preparing formaldehyde-free resorcinol resins are disclosed. The methods generally comprise reacting resorcinol first with dicyclopentadiene and then reacting that mixture with an olefinic compound. The resins produced by this method are also disclosed, as are rubber compositions utilizing the present resins. The resins are characterized as having a free resorcinol content of about 1 wt. % or less, and yielding a suitable softening point when used in rubber applications.

  • Patent number: 5945500
Abstract: Methods for preparing low free resorcinol resins are disclosed. These methods generally comprise reacting a resin with an aromatic olefinic compound; suitable resins include one or more resins selected from the group consisting of a dihydric phenol, a polyhydric phenol, a dihydric phenolic novolak resin and a polyhydric phenolic novolak resin; the addition product of at least one of these resins and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a monooxirane compound and a polyoxirane compound; and a phenol or alkyl or aralkyl substituted mono- or dihydric phenol modified form of these resins. The resins produced by this method are also disclosed, as are rubber compositions utilizing the resin produced by this method.

  • Patent number: 5244725
Abstract: A vulcanizable rubber composition is disclosed that includes (a) a rubber component selected from natural rubber, synthetic rubber or combinations thereof; (b) a methylene donor; and (c) a methylene acceptor which is the addition product of (1) at least one of the compounds including a dihydric phenol, a polyhydric phenol, a dihydric phenolic resin or a polyhydric phenolic resin, and (2) at least one of the compounds including a mono oxirane compound, an alkylene carbonate having from about 2 to 18 carbon atoms, or a poly oxirane compound. The addition product of this invention is a hydroxylalkyl aryl ether having from about 25 to 85 percent of the hydroxyl groups of the di- or polyhydric phenol or the dior polyhydric phenolic resin unreacted. A reinforced rubber article is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5021522
Abstract: An improved vulcanizable rubber composition of the type comprising (I) a rubber component selected from natural rubber, synthetic rubber or combinations thereof, and (II) a methylene donor compound which generates formaldehyde upon heating, and (III) a phenolic novolak resin type methylene acceptor compound is disclosed. The improvement comprises having at least ten mole percent of the phenolic groups of the phenolic novolak resin aralkylated with one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of styrene, alpha methyl styrene, beta methyl styrene, p-methyl styrene, alpha chloro styrene and vinyl naphthalenes.

  • Patent number: 4225391
Abstract: A method of preparing coals for coking in a conventional coke oven includes agglomerating the loose coal, in combination with a binder, into flakes, mixing the flakes with non-agglomerated coal, and charging the mixture into the coke oven in the conventional manner. The method provides for the utilization in a conventional coke oven, of coals that are marginal in coking quality, greater bulk densities of the coal as charged into a conventional coke oven, acceptable shatter resistance and physical stability of the coke produced, and acceptable carbonization pressure on the coke oven walls.
