    Abstract: A surgical instrument for insertion of an interbody fusion implant between adjacent vertebral bodies. The surgical instrument comprises a frame member, and a first and a second arm coupled to the frame member. Each arm includes a distal end region and a proximal end region, whereby the proximal end region of at least one arm is pivotably coupled to the frame member, and the distal end region of each arm defines a distractor plate. The distractor plate of each arm is configured to be positioned in direct contact with a vertebral body. A wedge is positioned between the first and second arms, and is configured to translate the interbody fusion implant along an axis between the proximal end region and the distal end region of the arms while adjusting a distance between the distractor plates of the arms via a rack and pinion.

    Abstract: The present invention has a plate and rod assembly for implantation in the cervical region of the spine which includes an occipital plate having an angled anchor bridging area that is attached to the lower posterior curve of the skull. On either side the bridging area is connected to offset legs which join flanged areas having a high friction surface and which include tethered rod anchors having rod-receiving channels. These flanges include undercut slots longer in one direction than the other to capture the side plates integral to the open U-shaped members including the rod-receiving channels. The side plates extend longer in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the rod when it is in the channel so that they can thus be lowered into the slot and rotated by 90 degrees to capture the channels in the flanges. The channels are closed by a capnut which has a bottom annular flange that also helps to lock the rod in place.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel minimally invasive surgical system and method for introducing instruments and/or biomaterial into the interior of a bone, particularly the interior of a vertebral body, using a unique cannulated screw that is sized and configured to penetrate the cortical bone and thereby provide access to the interior of the bone through the integral cannula of the screw. That same screw having a screw head that is then adaptable to employ a connector for securely holding a connecting device, such as a spinal rod or plate that can then be used to fix bones or bone fragments together. A method of fixing bones or bone fragments is also provided.

    Abstract: An intervertebral body fusion device has a wedge body, a cage component with a plurality of deployable spines having end plate penetrating teeth, and a contraction mechanism for drawing the wedge body into the cage component. The device is surgically placed intervertebrally into the spine from an anterior surgical approach. In its final surgically-implanted position, the wedge body is substantially fully drawn within the cage component, resulting in a full deployment of teeth and associated spines into the adjacent end plates of the vertebral bodies, while simultaneously restoring the angle of lordosis to the spine.
