Patent number: 8176048Abstract: A method transforms unstructured text into structured data in a domain-specific ontology. The method includes recording an input block of text using an information extraction module (IEM), accessing a domain-specific ontology and supplemental data in a knowledge source(s) via the IEM, processing the input text block, and using the IEM to generate a plurality of nodes in the domain-specific ontology. Each node classifies the unstructured text to corresponding objects of interest, thereby transforming the unstructured text into the structured data. An IEM is also provided having a computer device and an algorithm executable thereby to transform unstructured text into structured data in a domain-specific ontology. The IEM is adapted for recording a text phrase using the computer device, accessing and retrieving the domain-specific ontology and supplemental data from a knowledge source(s), and processing the text block using the computer device to generate a plurality of nodes in the domain-specific ontology.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2009Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventor: Alexander P. Publication number: 20100138435Abstract: A method of linking information to an electronically enabled manufactured part archive includes identifying an area of the electronically enabled manufactured part archive, defining the area with a geometric token, and electronically identifying information. The information may relate to at least a portion of a manufactured part which is associated with the identified area of the manufactured part archive. The method may also include electronically associating the information with the identified area and/or the geometric token, wherein the information is configured for retrieval.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2010Publication date: June 3, 2010Inventors: Ronald M. Lesperance, John A. Cafeo, Andrea M. Simon, Alexander P. Morgan

Publication number: 20090265364Abstract: A system and method for converting text related to vehicle service to symptom codes. The method includes typing into work orders and service reports statements that describe the various symptoms and problems of a vehicle that is being serviced. The work orders and service reports are then transmitted to a database facility where they are analyzed. Prior to the reports being analyzed, the text in the work order and service reports is read by a machine reader that converts the text to symptom codes that describe particular vehicle conditions and symptoms. A processor analyzes the codes for patterns and other relationships, and can provide a display of such patterns. Further, the codes and reports are stored in a memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 16, 2008Publication date: October 22, 2009Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC.Inventors: Alexander P. Morgan, Steven W. Holland, Andrea M. Simon, Pulak Bandyopadhyay, Sugato Chakrabarty, Rahul Chougule

Publication number: 20080177702Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products for using case-based reasoning (CBR) information retrieval processes without creating a case base. Methods include accessing a data model that includes symptom attributes and solution attributes. A query is received from a requester specifying one or more values for one or more of the symptom attributes. The query is executed and execution includes searching a database of archive records for the specified symptom attribute values and receiving a subset of the archive records that include the specified values. Values associated with one or more of the solution attributes for each of the records in the subset are determined. A portion of this “determination of values” may be performed using an information extraction tool on unstructured text data contained in the archive records. A temporary case record is created for each of the records in the subset.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 23, 2007Publication date: July 24, 2008Applicant: GM Global Technology Operations, Inc.Inventor: Alexander P. Morgan

Patent number: 7092937Abstract: A method for vehicle diagnostic knowledge delivery comprising receiving a search request from a user system and accessing a database of case records in response to the search request. Each of the case records includes a case-record number attribute, a set of vehicle-description attributes, a set of bookkeeping attributes, a set of system attributes, a set of symptom attributes, and a set of action attributes. The method further comprises searching the database of case records for a case record responsive to the search request. If a case record responsive to the search request is located, it is transmitted to the user system.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2003Date of Patent: August 15, 2006Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Alexander P. Morgan, Lawrence M. Quinn, Gulcin Sengir, Diane I. Gibbons, Michael A. Sowa, Stephen L. Falko, Frederick J. Vondrak, Thorsten W. Rommel

Publication number: 20040186705Abstract: A method for concept word management. The method comprises receiving an editing request for a text document from a requestor. The editing request includes an initial phrase located in the text document. An ontology associated with the text document is searched for the initial phrase. The initial phrase is distinguished in the text document in response to the initial phrase being located in the ontology and to the editing request further including a distinguish phrase command. An alternate phrase associated with the initial phrase is presented to the requestor in response to the initial phrase being located in the ontology and to the editing request further including a display alternate phrase command. The initial phrase is replaced in the text document with the alternate phrase in response to the editing request further including a replace phrase command.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2003Publication date: September 23, 2004Inventors: Alexander P. Morgan, John Anthony Cafeo, Diane I. Gibbons, Ronald Michael Lesperance, Gulcin Sengir, Andrea Marie Simon
