  • Patent number: 11673844
Abstract: An explosive device is described herein, wherein the explosive device includes a substrate that has a surface, wherein surface energy of a portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in a vacuum chamber from a first surface energy to a second surface energy. The explosive device additionally includes explosive material that has been deposited on the surface of the substrate in the vacuum chamber by way of physical vapor deposition (PVD), wherein the explosive material is deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate subsequent to the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate being modified from the first surface energy to the second surface energy.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 5, 2022
Date of Patent: June 13, 2023
Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC
Inventors: Eric Christopher Forrest, Robert Knepper, Alexander S. Tappan, Michael P. Marquez

  • Patent number: 8048242
Abstract: A nanocomposite thermite ink for use in inkjet, screen, and gravure printing. Embodiments of this invention do not require separation of the fuel and oxidizer constituents prior to application of the ink to the printed substrate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 5, 2007
Date of Patent: November 1, 2011
    Assignee: Sandia Corporation
Inventors: Alexander S. Tappan, Joseph Cesarano, III, John N. Stuecker
  • Patent number: 7767931
Abstract: A process for generating nanoscale particles of energetic materials, such as explosive materials, using ultrashort-pulse laser irradiation. The use of ultrashort laser pulses in embodiments of this invention enables one to generate particles by laser ablation that retain the chemical identity of the starting material while avoiding ignition, deflagration, and detonation of the explosive material.
