  • Patent number: 6415596
Abstract: The present invention pertains to the field of rocketry and more precisely to liquid-propellant rocket engines and to rocket power units. This invention essentially relates to a method for increasing the specific impulse in a liquid-propellant rocket engine by using oxygen as well as a hydrocarbon fuel consisting of dicyclobutyl (C8H14). The dicyclobutyl provides for a substantial increase in the specific impulse of the liquid-propellant rocket engine when compared with kerosene. This invention also relates to a power unit for a rocket that has tanks for liquid oxygen and for the hydrocarbon fuel. Since the fuel tank is filled with dicyclobutyl (C8H14), it is thus possible to increase the thrust, the specific impulse, as well as the in-flight operation duration of the engine, and to reduce the weight of the tanks without any substantial change in the circuits of the liquid-propellant rocket engine and of the rocket power unit.

  • Patent number: 4122287
Abstract: A method of preparing 2,6-di-tert.butyl-4-methylphenol comprising reacting 2,6-di-tert.butylphenol with formaldehyde and dimethylamine in a medium of methanol or ethanol at a temperature within the range of from 80.degree. to 90.degree. C to give a reaction mass containing N,N-dimethyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylamine and readily-volatile products such as methanol or ethanol, water and bis-amine. The readily-volatile products are removed from the reaction mass by heating thereof to a temperature within the range of from 110.degree. to 140.degree. C simultaneously with purging the reaction mass with an inert gas containing a secondary amine in an amount of from 5 to 50% by volume. Thereafter, N,N-dimethyl-3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxybenzylamine is contacted with hydrogen at a molar ratio therebetween of 1:4-10 respectively on a hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature ranging from 120.degree. to 160.degree. C, to give the desired product which is then isolated.

  • Patent number: 4101600
Abstract: The method of dimerization of alpha-olefins consists in mixing at least one alpha-olefin with a two-component catalyst consisting of organic compounds of titanium, having the general formula Ti (OR).sub.4, and of aluminum, having the general formula AlR.sub.3, where R is an alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or an aryl, in a medium of a hydrocarbon solvent, at a temperature of 0.degree. to 100.degree. C and a pressure from 1 to 30 atm. Said constituents of the catalyst are pretreated with an ethylene-hydrogen mixture, containing from 5 to 95 percent by volume of hydrogen, at a temperature of from 0.degree. to 100.degree. C and a pressure of the ethylene-hydrogen mixture from 0.2 to 15 atm., for a period of time from 1 to 120 minutes. The method ensures high yields of butene-1 and hexenes, and high selectivity of the catalyst to said products. The butene-1 content of the butane mixture obtained in the process of ethylene dimerization is as high as 99 percent.

  • Patent number: 4087469
Abstract: A method of producing 2,2'-methylenebis(4,6-dialkylphenols) residing in that 2,4-dialkylphenols interact with acetals in the presence of an acid catalyst at a temperature from 30.degree. C to 140.degree. C with the formation of a reaction mixture containing the desired product and with subsequent separation of the desired product from said mixture, the starting reagents being taken in amounts of 1 mole of 2,4-dialkylphenol per 1-10 moles of acetal. The method is technologically simple and accomplished without the formation of waste water.

  • Patent number: 3951754
Abstract: A method of inhibiting the thermopolymerization of isoprene or butadiene in the process of isolation thereof by extractive distillation from a mixture of hydrocarbons obtained in dehydrogenation of isopentane and butane. The method of inhibiting includes, prior to the introduction of said mixture of hydrocarbons and a polar extractant into an extractive distillation metal apparatus, treating the surface of the apparatus with a 1-25% aqueous solution of passivators, viz. nitrites, sulphites or phosphates of alkali metals at a temperature of 20.degree.-100.degree.C. The mixture of hydrocarbons and the polar extractant with an inhibitor of isoprene or butadiene thermopolymerization introduced into the polar extractant are then fed into said apparatus in an amount of 0.01-1% of the extractant weight. The present method makes it possible to reduce markedly the formation of isoprene and butadiene and, hence, to prevent the plugging of the extractive distillation apparatuses with the aforementioned thermopolymers.
