  • Patent number: 8322286
Abstract: A cartridge case intended for explosive materials. A releasable base plate is provided in a bottom section of the cartridge case. A base plate locking device includes a temperature dependent shape memory material. A space is provided partly in the bottom section of the cartridge case and partly in the base plate of the cartridge case defining a motion path inclined backwards for the shape memory material to follow when its passes a temperature such that the shape memory struggles to resume a former shape, resulting in that the base plate is unlocked from the bottom section of the cartridge case and released. A round of ammunition including the cartridge case.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: December 4, 2012
    Assignee: SAAB AB

  • Patent number: 8316771
Abstract: A cartridge case intended for explosive materials. A releasable base plate is provided in a bottom section of the cartridge case. A base plate locking device includes a temperature dependent shape memory material. The shape memory material of the base plate locking device is provided to exert a crushing force on the cartridge case at a temperature increase passing a temperature such that the shape memory material in question struggles to resume a former shape in order to break up the connection between the base plate and the bottom section of the cartridge case and release the base plate from the bottom section of the cartridge case. A round of ammunition includes the cartridge case.

  • Publication number: 20090107854
Abstract: A propellant blast suppressive transportation/storage box for at least one layer of elongate large-caliber ammunition, such as shells. The box is formed as a parallelepipedic cage of a steel grid structure having a bottom section rigidly integrated with four side wall sections so as to define a storage compartment for snugly receiving the at least one layer of ammunition therein. A cage lid is pivotally attached to an upper reinforcement rim of at least one of the side walls sections.

  • Patent number: 7051511
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a method and an arrangement for preventing explosives such as rocket engines from exploding while subjected to an external fire in an ammunition bunker. The basic principle underlying the invention is that the casing surrounding the explosive includes a number of parts which are held together by mounting components made from a shape memory alloy, the properties of which are selected in such a manner that these mounting components no longer hold the various parts of the casing together if the surrounding temperature rises to approach the ignition temperature of the explosive in the rocket engine.

  • Publication number: 20040244358
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for, in connection with a possible external fire in an ammunition bunker, preventing products container therein comprising encased explosives, such as for example rocket engines, exploding. The basic principle underlying the invention is that the casing (2, 6) surrounding the explosive is to consist of a number of parts which are held together by mounting components (11) made from shape memory alloy, the properties of which are selected in such a manner that these mounting components no longer hold the various parts of the casing together if the surrounding temperature rises to such a great extend that the ignition temperature of the explosive begins to approach.
