    Abstract: The present invention provides a novel gene and enzyme isolated from cocklebur (Xanthium sp.) which confers resistance to several structurally unrelated classes of herbicides in plants, plant tissues and seeds. In particular, the class of herbicides consists of herbicides wherein acetolactate synthase (ALS) is the site of action and includes sulfonylureas, imidazolinones, triazolopyrimidines, pyrimidyloxybenzoates and phthalides.
