  • Patent number: 5566762
Abstract: This arrangement and method enables a window to be milled in casing (C) without first removing smaller diameter tubing (T) from the casing (C). An expandable anchor (A) has movable members (14), (19) on top expander (8) and bottom expander (12) which support slip means (21) in retracted position to enable passage through smaller diameter tubing (T) extending into larger diameter casing (C). Actuation of a work string (HSS or WSS) in a manner well known to those skilled in the art expands, or moves the members to secure the slip means and anchor (A) in larger diameter casing C. A whipstock tool including a whipstock W, a hinge assembly H, a centering device, and an orienting sub (OS). A latch assembly (LA) is then run on a workstring (WS) through the smaller diameter tubing (T) and engaged in orienting slot (7) in the riser 2 of Anchor A and a mill (57) on the workstring mills a window in the casing when the workstring is moved along the whipstock.

  • Patent number: 5339913
Abstract: A down hole well tool shown in the form of an orienting tool (OT) has mandrel (16) with helical grooves (16a) thereon and a tubular member (20) which telescopically receives the mandrel (16). Keys (22) on tubular member (22) engage in the grooves (16a). Mandrel (16) is connected with non rotatable coil tubing (T) and member (20) is connected to a bottom hole assembly (BHA) which may comprise a plurality of components or a single device to form a well tool. The orienting or rotating tool (OT) and down hole assembly (BHA) constitute an orienting assembly, for orienting or rotating a device such as a drill bit (13) to drill a deviated well bore, including a horizontal well bore, to a desired target area. Downhole instruments relay to the surface equipment (1) the azimuth, inclination and tool face of the directional drilling equipment.

  • Patent number: 5131464
Abstract: A connectable and releasable electrical wet connect for transmitting electrical signals in a well drill string includes retrievable coacting telescoping male and female member electrical connectors. The male member includes a support shoulder for supporting the wet connect in the drill string, a passageway for the flow of fluids, an electrical contact, a tapered and insulating seal and a fishing shoulder. The female member includes a telescopically engageable electrical receptacle, and a tapered and insulating female seal. The wet connect telescopically connects and disconnects in the drill string and electrically isolates the electrical signal transmitted through the wet connect from the fluid in the drill string.

  • Patent number: 5107939
Abstract: A method and apparatus for drilling a directional well by running and setting a retrievable steering tool in the drill pipe with a wireline conductor and removable supporting the upper end of the conductor from a fluid passing support seated on the shoulder inside the drill string. Telescopically inserting a single piece conductor wire into the drill pipe from the outside through a non-rotatable connection and into the drill string for raising the lowering the lower end of the single piece conductor in a telescopically and sealingly engaging connection to the wireline electrical conductor for transmitting communication from the steering tool to the well surface.

  • Patent number: 5035293
Abstract: A blade for a member that is supported on a rotatable well string to position the blade in operating position to engage and drill a well bore or enlarge a well bore. The blade has a bottom and side surface each with leading and trailing edges. Cutting elements extend along and terminate in the same plane as the leading bottom and side edges of the bottom and side surfaces; shock absorbers in the bottom surface extend below the bottom surface and cutting elements which shock absorbers are configured and spaced to form a non-continuous surface along and below the blade bottom surface to contact the earth ahead of the cutting elements to form annular spaced recesses or depressions in the earth so that when the cutting elements engage the earth, they do not contact a uniform earth extent or wall.

  • Patent number: 4895215
Abstract: A rotatable seal cage assembly for positioning between relatively movable members including a ring with inner and outer circumferential edges, which edges are joined by two flat side surfaces extending therebetween. An annular projecting surface extends from one of the ring side surfaces. A projection extends from the other side surface of the ring to be engaged by rotatable bearings to rotate the ring when relative rotation of the members occurs. Radially spaced seals are provided on each side of the annular projecting surface to seal between the rotatable seal cage assembly and each of the relatively movable members and inhibit damage to the radially spaced seals between the relatively movable members.

  • Patent number: 4825964
Abstract: A sealing relationship between a rotatable and stationary member is formed by a seal arrangement between the rotatable and stationary member wherein a first member engages the seals forming the sealing relationship and a second member is rotatable by the rotatable member to rotate the first member about the stationary member at a substantially reduced rotational speed relative to the rotational speed of the rotatable member to inhibit damage to the sealing relationship.

  • Patent number: 4614242
Abstract: A bore hole enlarging method and arrangement for connection with a rotary pipe string includes inner and outer body sections which form a body structure to provide a fluid flow path therethrough for communicating with piston and cylinder means formed between the body sections for receiving drilling fluid to effect telescopic movement between the body sections. Cutter arms are pivotally mounted on the inner body section and a cooperable support arrangement on the cutter arms and outer body section cooperate to expand or move the cutter arms outwardly of the body structure upon telescopic movement of the body sections in one relative direction and assist in attracting the cutter arms when desired.

  • Patent number: 4533003
Abstract: An underreamer, hole opener, or expansible rotary drill bit including a body having a bore therethrough, an arm mounted at its upper end to the body, a conical cutter mounted for rotation on the lower end of each arm, a cup-shape thrust bearing between the cutter and the arm, a bolt through the arm to secure the cutter on the arm and means including a ball and groove between the bolt and the cutter to lock the bolt to the cutter. In the underreamer form of the present invention, the arms are pivotally mounted in slots in the body and means is provided for moving their arms to their cutting position with their lower ends positioned radially outward from the body.
