  • Patent number: 8351519
Abstract: Techniques and apparatus for embedding one or more bits of 802.11 Very High Throughput (VHT) information in existing IEEE 802.11 preamble fields are provided. As will be described herein, because different combinations of modulation techniques, coding schemes, and transmission lengths result in the same transmit time (e.g., in terms of symbol length), a clever choice of modulation, coding, and length may allow some extra information to be embedded in a legacy field for use by VHT stations. In this manner, the total VHT preamble transmission time may potentially be reduced, thereby increasing the efficiency of the physical layer (PHY). Moreover, the embedded bits may most likely be invisible to legacy stations, since the transmission time that such stations compute will be independent of these bits by design.

  • Publication number: 20120044265
Abstract: The subject matter disclosed herein may relate to methods, apparatuses, systems, devices, articles, or means for generating or using an indoor likelihood heatmap, etc. For certain example implementations, a method for a device may comprise projecting multiple grid points over a schematic map of an indoor area, with the schematic map indicating multiple obstructions of the indoor area. Feasible paths between grid point pairs of the multiple grid points may be determined. For a particular grid point of the multiple grid points, a count of the feasible paths that traverse the particular grid point may be determined. A likelihood heatmap for use in one or more navigational applications may be generated based, at least in part, on the count. Other example implementations are described herein.

  • Publication number: 20110269478
Abstract: An appliance facilitates localization of a station (STA) in a network, for example, a short-range wireless network. An automatic response to a request for a measurement related communication is provided. The appliance can include a radio frequency (RF) interface and a media access control (MAC) section. The MAC section can receive the request and generate the automatic response immediately after a uniform period that is uniform among any such appliance within the network. The appliance performs only the generation of the automatic response, though the response can include additional information such as (x, y) coordinates of the appliance.

  • Publication number: 20110177809
Abstract: Techniques are provided that may be implemented in various methods and apparatuses to allow an electronic device to determine when it is transitioning or has transitioned from a first environment to a second environment based, at least in part, on at least one measured parameter. The measured parameter may be based, at least in part, on one or more received wireless signals associated with one or more wireless signal transmitters, and/or one or more signals associated with one or more non-radio sensors. The electronic device may then affect operation of a navigation function (e.g., having a trajectory estimation filter) based, at least in part, on the measured parameter.

  • Publication number: 20110176468
Abstract: A time-of-propagation distance-determining method involves sending a probe request from a handset to an AP and receiving a return ACK. The time it takes for the probe request to propagate to the AP, the turnaround time, and the time it takes the ACK to propagate back to the handset is measured on the handset. The turnaround time is subtracted from the measured time, and the result is used to make a distance determination. In order to reduce power consumption, the “lowest overall transmit energy” setting that will give acceptable reception of a probe request sent by the handset to the AP station is determined. The lowest overall transmit energy setting involves a bit rate setting and a transmit power setting. The lowest overall transmit energy setting is used to send probe requests when probe requests are sent from the handset in carrying out a time-of-propagation distance-determining transaction.

  • Publication number: 20110164576
Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide a heuristic algorithm for calculating accurate target SINR values for the minimum mean square error (MMSE) beamforming algorithm to decrease the complexity of the MMSE algorithm. The heuristic algorithm for calculating target SINR values considers practical system constraints, such as frequency selective channels, power amplifier distortion, imperfect channel state information as well as limited computing power at the access point.

  • Publication number: 20110090081
Abstract: A displacement device for mapping wireless signal fingerprints includes motion sensors and at least one of a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) sensor and a round trip time (RTT) sensor. The motion sensors may include a pedometer and one or more sensors to receive turn information. The start position of the displacement device is initialized and as the displacement device is moved through an environment, the position of each measurement location is determined using the initialized position and data from the motion sensors. The measurement position along with the RSSI and/or RTT measurement is stored in a database, from which a map can be generated. The position of the access point may be determined using the RSSI measurement or RTT measurement. Additionally, accumulated errors in the measurement position may be monitored and when greater than a threshold, a user may be prompted to reinitialize the position of the displacement device.
