Publication number: 20240061466Abstract: An electronic device display may have an inner layer with a pixel array for displaying images and an outer layer with an array of light modulator cells operable in transparent and light-blocking modes. Force sensor and touch sensor circuitry may be used to gather user input such as information on finger pressure or stylus input applied to a location on the display. A block of the cells may be placed into a transparent mode to form a transparent window based on information from the sensor circuitry. Images on the pixel array may be viewed through the window. In another mode of operation, images can be displayed by adjusting the cells of the light modulator layer and backlight illumination may be provided by the pixel array. A camera and a flash or other optical components may be overlapped by an adjustable shutter.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 2, 2023Publication date: February 22, 2024Inventors: Harry K. Ng, Alvin K. Ng, Katherine E. Tong, Tyler S. Bushnell, Amin M. Younes, Benjamin S. Bustle, Christopher D. Jones, James R. Wilson

Patent number: 10642228Abstract: This application relates to a wearable electronic device including a housing having an illumination region, where the housing can carry components that can include a processor capable of receiving an input signal and responding to the input signal by providing an illumination signal. The components can further include independently-controllable light-emitting units carried by the housing at the illumination region and in communication with the processor, the light-emitting units capable of (i) receiving the illumination signal from the processor, and (ii) presenting the notification by emitting an amount of light in accordance with the illumination signal.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2018Date of Patent: May 5, 2020Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Steven P. Cardinali, Amin M. Younes

Publication number: 20200107096Abstract: A liquid-resistant microphone assembly includes a substrate defining a sound-entry region and a microphone transducer coupled with the substrate. The transducer has a sound-responsive region acoustically coupled with the sound-entry opening defined by the substrate. A liquid-resistant port membrane spans across the sound-entry opening defined by the substrate. The membrane is gas-permeable. An adhesive layer is positioned between the substrate and the liquid-resistant port membrane, coupling the liquid-resistant port membrane with the substrate and spacing the liquid-resistant port membrane from the substrate to form a gap between the membrane and the substrate. The adhesive layer defines an aperture having a periphery extending around and positioned outward of the sound-entry region. Modules and electronic devices incorporating such a microphone transducer also are disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 28, 2018Publication date: April 2, 2020Inventors: Anthony D. Minervini, David S. Wilkes, JR., Nikolas T. Vitt, Peter C. Hrudey, Ruchir M. Dave, Amin M. Younes

Patent number: 10599192Abstract: This application relates to a portable electronic device including a first sensing module and a second sensing module that are both in communication with a processor. The portable electronic device can include access ports that are formed in the housing, where the first and second sensing modules are capable of receiving an external stimulus by way of the access ports. A plate is positioned in the housing between a wall of the housing and the sensing modules. The plate and the wall define non-linear flow paths between the access ports to the first and second sensing modules. The non-linear flow paths can transmit the external stimulus to cause at least one of the first or second sensing modules to provide a detection signal to the processor that causes a display unit to present a notification that corresponds to the external stimulus.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2018Date of Patent: March 24, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Amin M. Younes, James G. Horiuchi, Ryan C. Perkins, Brad G. Boozer, Christopher M. Werner, Maegan K. Spencer, Sherry Tang, Eugene H. Fox, Mark A. Murphy, Molly J. Anderson, Rico L. Zorkendorfer, Baris Ozgen

Patent number: 9972934Abstract: An electronic device with a port is disclosed. To expel liquid in the port, the port includes modifications to form a capillary pressure gradient with the liquid, causing uneven capillary forces to act on the liquid in the port. For example, the port may include an asymmetric profile with one section having a curved profile and another section having one or more linear profiles that join at an edge. The edge may form a relative higher curved surface as compared to the curved profile. As a result, the capillary pressure gradient may exert a higher capillary pressure in a location associated with the edge, as compared to a capillary pressure along the curved profile. The capillary pressure gradient causes ambient air into the port along the edge, and separates the liquid from the edge, allowing gravity to overcome atmospheric pressure and causing removal of the liquid from the port.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2017Date of Patent: May 15, 2018Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Warren Taylor, Jesse A.
