  • Patent number: 6143918
Abstract: Methods for preparing novel dibenzoylresorcinol-based compounds are disclosed, wherein the dibenzoylresorcinol is bonded to the residue of either an alcohol or a carboxylic acid group, via a methylene carboxylate linking group; and wherein the dibenzoylresorcinol is bonded directly to a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group which does not include a pendent hydroxyl group. The groups attached to the dibenzoylresorcinol may contain a wide variety of functional sites which permit further reaction, e.g., copolymerization. The described compounds are very useful as UV light absorbers and may be used to form improved coating compositions which usually include a transparent, polymeric matrix material. The coating compositions may be applied to various substrates, e.g., thermoplastics, to afford a selection of enhanced properties, such as UV light resistance and abrasion resistance.

  • Patent number: 6037059
Abstract: Novel dibenzoylresorcinol compositions capable of absorbing ultraviolet light having the formula ##STR1## where Ar.sub.1 and Ar.sub.2 are independently substituted or unsubstituted monocyclic or polycyclic aryl groups, R is hydrogen, an aryl group, or a linear or branched alkyl chain having less than about 10 carbons, and Ar.sub.3 is an aryl group bearing at least one hydroxyl group. Methods of making the compositions are provided. The novel dibenzoylresorcinol compositions are methylene-bridged dibenzoylresorcinol derivatives having a phenol group on the bridging methylene and are compatible in coating compositions to improve the weatherability of thermoplastic substrates.

  • Patent number: 5959012
Abstract: An epoxylated DBR, dibenzoylresorcinol and various derivatives thereof have been prepared to show usefulness in coatings due to compatibility and solubility. Such coatings can be acrylics, epoxies, or silicone hardcoats which are thermally or photo cured thermoset, or thermoplastic coating materials in a variety of solvent types. The disclosed UV absorber also has the advantage of a higher molecular weight and lower volatility than DBR alone thus providing processing advantages.

  • Patent number: 5905150
Abstract: An improved process for preparing a nitrogen or oxygen containing organoalkoxysilane such as an isocyanurate or fumarate by reacting a haloalkylaikoxysilane such as a chloropropytrimethoxysilane and a reactant of either a cyanate or an ammonium salt of an organic acid of C1-C20 carbon atoms or a metal salt of an organic acid of C1-C20 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof to a reaction temperature of at least about 80.degree. C. to about 200.degree. C., the improvement is in carrying out the reaction in the presence of a guanidinium salt phase as a transfer catalyst such as hexaethylguanidinium chloride. The improved process also is reacted wherein the temperature increase from the exotherm reaction above the reaction temperature ranges from about 0.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. A preferred metal cyanate is sodium cyanate.

  • Patent number: 5817183
Abstract: A method is provided for salvaging thermoplastic substrates from discarded coated thermoplastic articles which have been surface treated with a protective or decorative organic coating. The discarded coated thermoplastic substrates, such as polycarbonate substrates, can be granulated, treated with an aqueous caustic-surfactant solution which contains an anionic, nonionic or mixture thereof surfactant, and where the treated thermoplastic substrates are thereafter washed until a neutral pH of the wash rinse-off solution is achieved.
