Patent number: 10947919Abstract: A fuel injector controller is disclosed. The fuel injector controller may determine respective values of a set of parameters of the engine; process, using a neural network, the respective values to determine a target fuel output of a fuel injector, wherein the neural network is configured to determine the target fuel output based on the set of parameters being an input layer of the neural network; determine, based on an output of the neural network, the target fuel output; and provide the determined target fuel output to the fuel injector to permit the fuel injector to inject fuel according to the target fuel output.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2019Date of Patent: March 16, 2021Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Sylvain Charbonnel, Greg Armstrong, Anand Krishnamurthygopalan, James Ulstad, Kranti Nellutla

Patent number: 10794251Abstract: An engine has an injector communicating with a combustion chamber to introduce a plurality of dosing shots to mix with exhaust gases and regenerate an aftertreatment device downstream of the combustion chamber. An apportionment strategy can apportion a per cylinder quantity, representing the quantity of dosing fuel to introduce per cylinder per combustion cycle, among a predefined number of dosing shots each having a first per shot quantity. The strategy compares the predefined number of dosing shots with a temporal dosing window to determine if predefined number of dosing shots can be conducted within the temporal dosing window. If so, the strategy proceeds to introduce the predefined number of dosing shots and if not, the strategy may recalculate a reduced number of dosing shots and reapportions a second per shot quantity.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2016Date of Patent: October 6, 2020Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: James S. Ulstad, Kranti K. Nellutla, Greg L. Armstrong, Steven Y. Tian, Brian P. Brennan, Sasidhar Rayasam, Anand KrishnamurthyGopalan

Patent number: 10787981Abstract: Power system optimization is disclosed. An example power system described herein may include an engine control module that receives measurements associated with sensors, identifies settings associated with control devices, determines that a first set of parameters associated with the one or more control devices is to be optimized according to a first optimization process, iteratively performs the first optimization process until the first set of parameters are optimized, determines that a second set of parameters associated with the one or more control devices are to be optimized according to a second optimization process, iteratively performs the second optimization process until the second set of parameters are optimized, and, after the second set of parameters are optimized according to the second optimization process, configures one of the control devices to operate using an optimized value for the control device determined using the second optimization process.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2018Date of Patent: September 29, 2020Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Sylvain Charbonnel, Fang Guo, Anand Krishnamurthygopalan, Gavin Williams

Patent number: 10669952Abstract: A cylinder cutout system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The system may include a plurality of cylinders having a first pattern of cylinders and a second pattern of cylinders. Additionally, a fuel governor operatively coupled to a plurality of fuel injectors may regulate an amount of fuel received by the plurality of cylinders. The system may further include a plurality of sensors configured to collect a set of engine data and a controller communicably coupled with the plurality of fuel injectors, the fuel governor and the plurality of sensors. The controller may be programmed to detect a start-up condition of the engine and to execute a cylinder test cycle on at least a portion of the plurality of cylinders based on a positive detection of the start-up condition. The controller may activate one of the first or second patterns of cylinders based on the cylinder test cycle results.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2018Date of Patent: June 2, 2020Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: James Ulstad, Laura Huhn, Blake Landon Smith, Samuel Were, Anand KrishnamurthyGopalan, Aaron D.
