Abstract: Methods of inhibiting angiogenesis in humans and animals by administering a effective amount of a secondary plant metabolite from jojoba, having the general formula I shown below, are disclosed. Preferred compounds having general formula I include 4-desmethylsimmondsin, 5-desmethylsimmondsin, 4,5-didesmethylsimmondsin, 4,5-dimethylsimmondsin, 4-desmethylsimmondsin-2?-ferulate, 5-desmethylsimmondsin-2?-ferulate, 4,5-didesmethylsimmondsin-2?-ferulate and 4,5-dimethylsimmondsin-2?-ferulate. Such compounds can be synthesized chemically according to well known techniques or can be isolated from refined and de-oiled jojoba flour by conventional extraction techniques using polar solvents such as a ketone or a low boiling point alcohol.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the use of an active component derived from jojoba, and in particular a simmondsin, steroisomeric forms, racemic mixtures, metabolites, pharmaceutically acceptable esters or salts thereof, or mixtures thereof for the manufacture of a medicament for inhibiting angiogenesis and for the manufacture of a medicament for treating angiogenesis-related disease. The present invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions for inhibiting angiogenesis or for treating angiogenesis-related diseases in humans or animals and to methods for inhibiting angiogenesis and for treating angiogenesis-related diseases in humans or animals.

Abstract: The resinous fraction comprising toxic p-coumaric acid derivatives is extracted from jojoba press-cake by means of an apolar mixture of solvents which mixture is a selective eluter for said p-coumaric acid derivatives. Particularly the extraction is performed with a mixture of acetone and hexane comprising up to 70 vol. % acetone or with a mixture of methyl ethyl ketone and hexane comprising up to 80 vol. % methyl ethyl ketone.
